Should my 1.6 FSI rattle like a diesel?

Two weeks into A2 ownership I've begun to notice little things here and there that I'm sure are normal, but I thought I'd ask just in case.

The engine seems a little rattly for a 46k 1.6 petrol.

At startup it rattles like a diesel for the first few seconds and then at idle it doesnt exactly purr - OK its not quite as rattly as a diesel but its not as quiet as my wife's 1.4 Corsa or my previous 1.8T Octavia, both of which are petrol engines.

The car has a full Audi service history up until the independent dealer I bought it off gave it a service prior to selling it.

Inside the car the engine sounds nice, particularly under acceleration when it sounds almost "sporty"

yep fsi's do sound like a diesel on start up for a few seconds--they all do it but sometimes it will be months between doing it and other times almost every start.
cheers mike

Yeap mine 'Rattles' on start up. only 2-3 Seconds and then dies away. It's a very diesel engine noise and when I test drove my car, I did ask the garage if they where sure this was a petrol, they laughed and I looked like a dumbass.

just to add to the safety in numbers philosphy:

Mine does this too. Not every time I start is, and not always from cold. Buy the 1 to 3 second diesel rattle is a common sound on start up. It has done this since I bought the car 4 years ago and is no worse now than it was then.

Don't worry about it, its a feature!

yes mine too,

seems as though they all do it

Did anyone buy theirs from new, have they always done it or does it become more promient over time?

haha yep thought exactly the same thing when i first turned the key on my fsi doesnt bother me tho.

OK!
So now i'm worried.
We've had our "new" 1.6 fsi for about 3 weeks now - but there is no evidence of any rattle of any kind!
In fact i think it sounds quite refined and a tad sporty!
Its much, much quieter than our TDi.
Hope it keeps behaving. :)

I think it "rattles" because the oil drains away from the tappets.
If yours doesn't rattle then maybe its because the oil is thicker than spec?
To be fair, mine does it at random intervals. The noise is exactly like a diesel engine starting up.

Hmmmm not too worried but ours has started doing this last night and this morning...possibly/probably just the very cold weather....but it does not seem to stop rattling even after a good 30 min drive :(
Almost sounds like something tinny is loose??!!

Do we still think it is just normal?

Looking at your other post this topic is describing something quite different - FSI's can rattle like a diesel for a few seconds but then it stops - 30 minutes is something quite different...!

Agreed :(...and so it is.

More to follow (see other post)

This is what I was going to suggest, my old MKII Golf Gti used to do this.

It could be the heat shield near the drivers side drive shaft inner side
This is what my annoying rattle was which was disconcerting
I thought it had come loose but closer inspection showed the washers had become detached from the plastic
Sorry I can't show you
The heat shield is white

Having failed to get our A2 up the drive in reverse due to the snow, I parked it nose upwards for the first time. It may be coincidence but there was no diesel-like clatter when starting it this way round.

phew, ive been living with that on my A2 for 4 years!!!. thought it was tappets or something. CAR magazine used to say the engines were a bit rough.. they also said it was a "technical tour de force!". :)

The high pressure fuel injectors on the VAG TFSI engines are loud and clattery (noticeable at idle/start up) don't know if this is the same for non-turbo FSI engines.

Am i glad i saw this post!! my A2 never had this rattling noise before, and its just come on 4 days ago, was thinking it could be the down to the cold, it rattles for about a minute, strangely, when i turn the steering wheel a bit it dies down.
glad this is normal!
