If you have an OSS Open Sky panoramatic roof!!

Dear all,

a good message for all of you being plagued by the broken-down OSS now or in the future.

As this not really well constructed part is now causing problems in others cars, too (Fabia, Roomster, Q5/Q7), Audi has now offered 10 years ex gratia repair to all OSS equipped cars. The only condition is the (last) service being done by an Audi Partner Garage (sorry don´t now how you call them in UK).
But watch out: the roof needs an experinced (and i mean really experienced) technician. So not all Audi garages do qualify. We one or two in Germany, who are really good at it.... One is neer Munich if you know what i mean

Azwole, who´s OSS is working again

Hi Azwole, welcome to the A2oc.
Thanks for the news on Open Sky. It will be interesting to see if Audi UK announce a similar scheme. So far, none of our members have found an Audi dealer keen to try or with the expertise to fix a broken sunroof.

Cheers Spike

Broken OSS :(

If any such offer does come to the UK, please will someone let me know!

My OSS might have more than one fault, but I can't get past the first to know.

No matter whether you press the button to open the roof or close it, the motor always turns in the same direction, so as to close the roof. The previous owner was probably frustrated by this fault and so would try to open the roof periodically ...which turns the motor to close the roof! The motor has now bust its gears. When the motor turns, I hear a quick clicking like cogs sliding.

So, might it be that the roof itself would open, if only the motor/gears were replaced? I realise this might involve taking the glass off the roof and will most likely be expensive. But how expensive. How many degrees of 'broken' are there for the OSS, and where do people think I fall...?

...I did once try using the allan-key winder, with some success. If I wound *very* slowly, the cogs wouldn't slip and so the roof started to retract. But when I got to the stage where the second piece of glass should start lifting up at the back, I just couldn't transfer enough power without the cogs slipping.

Thanks for your advice, folks. I'm Tom, by the way. I've been visiting the A2OC website for over a year and find it extremely useful. The people on here seem great, and it's nice to hear people sharing my enuthsiasm for what is an amazing vehicle!

Cheers,

Tom

Well, we will have to wait and see about Audi UK's decision.

I do know that Preston Audi have senior technicians, as I have had two of them working on my car, and they usually fix my electrical problems - for a price!

Next time I will visit Mike in Skipton for similar issues!

Perhaps this is one for Mike to pick up on with Audi on behalf of all the UK OSS members?

I will discuss the matter with my contacts at Audi UK in the near future to see if we can come to some conclusion. I suspect though that the insistence on recent Audi service history will be compulsory.

Cheers,

Mike

If I had a full service done with an Audi garage, waited a week or so, and then took the car to another Audi garage for the OSS fix, perhaps it'd be ok!?
Or are they not that daft? :)

any word on the guarantee?

Just been through the site looking for advice on my just broken Open Sky
Starting to panic at the potential cost.
Car currently in the local Audi garage and they have not yet quoted - just threatened huge costs.

Did anyone get anywhere with the guarantee from Audi? I can't find anything on the web backing this up. Could desperately do with some good news - if the cost is anything like the £1700 - £2000 mentioned in other posts its going to sink me.

All help and advice much appreciated.

@nuttinnew: a service history is a service history. Out of interest, how complete is it? Can you also please let me have your VIN per PN? That way I could get a completely accurate answer...

@j3nox: I don't know what Azwole's sources are. That doesnt mean it's not true, but I don't know where the info came from.

As far as repairs are concerned, I've been looking into this for Nuttinnew at Rinner in Bad Tölz. They're well known around Germany as being *the* place to go to get your roof fixed and they know this and are proud of it. If it's the cables snapped, then the repair should be of the order of €200. If it's both that and the movers, then it will be more expensive (€400). A complete new roof comes in at quite a lot more.

Bad Tölz is 900km from Calais. Do the maths....

I will be calling Rinner again probably tomorrow, if nothing else goes wrong at work (!) and asking for info. I have Nuttinnew's complete issue and we're already in agreement that it's probably cables and therefore the cheap option. I need to confirm that, though, as I spoke to a "normal" mechanic and not "Mr. OSS". He gave the impression, though, that he is aware of the reputation they have and the need to keep that up. This site and the German one represent the top 2 sites for the A2, no exceptions.

EDIT: the time required for these repairs is not very high. We're talking of the order of a morning, i.e 2-4 hours.

Ah, I missed the VIN bit, I'll send it over pronto (is it wrong to know it off the top of my head? :o ).

While my may well have the cheaper problem I am thinking it's a journey I only want to make once and that improved/stronger/uprated parts can be fitted then I'll have it all done. Belt & braces and all that; if they were nearer to the Nurburgring I'd've got the bits fitted when I was there a couple of weeks ago before it broke so it wouldn't break...oh well, such is life.

My sh was Audi up until the last two but I have genuine parts used including arb, other suspension bushes, everything except the dampers because I gather even new ones aren't that great

All of which reminds me I need to find out how what the helpful Audi tech thinks about repairing the roof now he's looked into what's involved.

Thanks again for your help Bret

The "kulanz" was just confirmed by on the phone by Rinner.

á la 'if it needs replacement, we'll do a service and then see what we can do'. No guarantees, but it's a hell of a lot better than I was expecting.

This is a silly idea but I'm going to say it anyway - I wonder -if there were enough UK OSS failures on the forum (say 10?), could we bring the Mountain to Mohammed so to speak - would the Rinner guys travel to the UK and do the lot over here if hosted by a decent garage?

Taking this idea a step further, I wonder if Audi UK woud get involved and bring the Rinner guys over here to train up the technicians in a nominated Audi workshop. If they would select a centrally located dealership, it could become a centre of excellence for A2 OSS.
The idea of several A2oc members considering a trip to Germany for OSS repairs may be the catalyst to make this happen

If/ when mine breaks I would consider driving to Germany to get it fixed in Convoy, that could be fun!

If the idea was to be put forward - and I'm not saying it's a bad one - then it needs to be done (along with the details) face-to-face. That's partly to do with the way that the Germans work, but mainly a cultural thing.

I think that Audi UK *may* be interested but will probably insist that their own training is "good enough". It's still no substitute for experience....

But just how many CSS owners do we have on this site?

Timmus, j3nox, nuttinnew. Trex is over on the continent so it works a little different for him.

So, questions that need to be answered, at least in my mind:

1) Would those owners consider repairs at €300?

2) Would we want to suggest a "masterclass" with several broken OSSes being repaired over a short time and several UK-based Audi Techs taking part? I don't feel location is really relevant but travel expenses will be incurred by someone, somewhere. Personally, I think it would be great if there was a dealer from, say oop north, dahn saawf and maybe the midlands somewhere... whether that will fly is another story entirely.

3) Can Audi garages tell us anything about the training they would normally partake of? Maybe the ones that are registered on here could comment?

4) Timescale for this is not going to be short. I can probably call the boss man himself and ask questions, but real information needs to be there. I could also probably ask if the Germans can talk to him directly, i.e. our Chairman or one of the Board members, but this needs to be absolutely solid before I ask.
