Project EYV (2001 Jaipur Red TDI AMF)

Evening all,

Been a little quiet on here the last week or so as work and home have kept me busier than normal. I’ve managed to find time to do some tinkering in the garage though. The works that have been going on in my spare time has been removing all the alcantara seat coverings from their frames due to them all being slightly out of shape. In short, the seats were removed from an A2 which had a sever rear end shunt that compressed the chassis, as such all 4 seats weren’t perfectly aligned. The seat coverings and foam are still perfect though. The rear seats wouldn’t lock down and the drivers seat was very stiff to recline due to a twisted frame. The passengers seat actually seems okay but whilst I’ve got full set of cloth donor seats from Craig @Fallan (thank you Craig) I might as well change it too.

So far the rear seats are now complete and I’m holding off from fitting the front seat coverings whilst I wait for a set of sport heating elements.

Having studied pictures both on here and and Audi Tradition I’m convinced that the only wat to achieve a perfect factory result is to obtain a set of donor heated sort seats to salvage the heating elements. SE heating elements are slightly different sure to different sized/spaced cover panels. This goes for the TT Mk1 heating elements too. So far I’ve not managed to see a set of heated seats with the panels the same size as the A2 sport seats which is essential due to the cut out in the elements for the hog-rings. This of course means that the switch from heated Twist sport Leather to heated Soul sport alcantara might take a little longer than I hoped for. The wait will be worth it though as I will eventually have another set of perfect unicorn seats.

I’ll add pictures another time, probably when I’m stitching in the heating elements, not looking forward to it but the end result will be worth all the time and effort I would have put in by then.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom, have you considered skoda superb vw pasat and golf mk6 seats,?
Morning Edd,

I’ve looked into as many options as possible from the same era but actually didn’t consider the Skoda Superb. Here’s what I based my search criteria off:

A2 Heated Sport Base:

The sport covering has 3 narrower panels and 1 longer panel at the front which wraps around.

A2 Seat Back:

The VW Passat B7 seats are certainly my a contender and aren’t that expensive to obtain. For me right now though I cannot get a financially viable set delivered to sunny Coalville.

Passat B7 Seat Base:

Although the seat base has an extra panel compared to the A2 it could actually work but there isn’t enough bolster coverage for a perfect job.

Passat B7 Seat Back:

Again the Passat Seat has more panels but this should be an issue.

VW Golf Mk 6 seats look quite similar to the Passat B7 seats above but come with a much larger price tag so ruled these out as it could be an expensive venture that isn’t guaranteed to work out perfectly. I can get a used set of A2 heated sport seats today for cheaper that I can get a set of these. Here’s a set that is currently on eBay where you can see the seat panels are similar to the Passat:

The Skoda Superb Mk2 hadn’t been considered u til now so thank you very much for mentioning them. Here’s a set I’ve just grabbed an online picture of:

This looks like it could work under an A2 seat back covering. Let’s look at the seat base.

The bolsters don’t look to provide good coverage of the A2 sport bolsters but these could work out very nicely for a set set of A2 heated SE seats; same amount of panels and lower profile bolsters.

The Audi TT 8N seats are pretty much the same as the Golf Mk6 seats in terms of seat covering and potential hog ring holes:

These TT seats are the cheapest alternative but still not sure that they’ll be a good enough fit to satisfy my quests for a second set of perfect unicorn seats.

In the future I might just get a set of the TT seats though, as they’re cheap enough to come by, to investigate what might be possible but my alcantara seats will be getting genuine A2 heating elements for sure.

Thanks again Edd for the recommendations/additional options and hope you understand why for now I'm going to hold out for a set of genuine heating elements. It shouldn’t be an unachievable task as I've already got the harder to source part of my request in the alcantara seats. All I need to do I find a set of A2 heated sport seats with any covering to use as a donor set. I obviously have such a set here in Twist but finding it difficult to accept I might have to get the seam ripped on them to remove the heating elements.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hello all,

With the decision to conduct an interior colour change from Twist to Soul finally confirmed after recently finding another set of alcantara sport seats meant that some difficult to obtain parts had to be located. First up was a Soul double DIN dashboard which I now have 2 en route via Colin @V666col. Guess I’ll have my head in a footwell again soon enough, cannot wait! Next up was to locate another auto dimming mirror with digital compass. These are only available from the USA so last week purchased such an item from eBay.com:

When it arrived yesterday I went to touch up the missing paint around the lower button which didn’t go quite according to plan. After a quick pass with alcohol more black paint left the button and adhered itself to the cloth. I was left with this:

As you can see above, what I ended up with something that wasn’t going to be a quick touch up to rectify and needed a different approach. So feeling a little deflated I considered my options and quickly remembered that Kraig @kraig22, who is local to me, has a laser vinyl cutting set up for the decals he provides to the 2 and 4 wheeled community:

Within minutes of wishing I hadn’t attempted to clean the mirror, I reached out to Kraig (thank you so much) who had a design created and printed within an hour. I was saved. What an awesome community we have around us! This was the design printed which was exactly what I was after:

With a half tin of Volico Soul in the garage I set out to resolve the situation. First up was to remove the remaining paint from the button:

Then applied Kraig’s awesome sticker/decal from Kraig:

I left the decal 30 minutes to cure onto the white button to hopefully eliminate any Volico product bleeding underneath it. After the 30 minute pause I masked up the whole mirror for painting:

As my lunch break was quickly coming to an end I rushed out to the garage to grab the paint and started shaking the tin. A few minutes later I had used up quite a lot of paint and definetly got more on the masked are. Than what I was trying to paint:

I let the paint cure for a couple of hours until I excitedly removed the masking and then carefully rolled back the decal:

Another lunchtime break well spent tinkering and extremely happy with the results. I cannot thank Kraig enough for offering such a lightning quick solution to my woes. Fingers crossed I can come across the rest of the Soul items I require to make this A2 every bit as special as Project EUD.

Kind regards,

Tom
