An OpenSky is reborn!

Finally after a long search found nice spec a2 , pan roof , leather sat nav heated seats etc , the pan roof works perfectly but is there any preventative maintenance that can be done to prevent problems ? My e class needs the seals lubricated at the service is there anything that needs to be done on he a2 thanks .

Welcome - sounds like your search was productive!

Yes, the runners, and the seals, should be lubricated regularly. Also, the roof benefits from being exercised regularly I'm sure.

I searched the threads for this a while back and there is a special silicone lubricant to use on the rubber seals, but as you would expect from Audi it cost a fortune it was around £50 a tube when I phoned them. I found on a thread there is an alternative that can be bought from B & Q. I searched high and low in the store for it and could only find silicon spray. I asked one of the assistants for some silicone grease/oil/lubricant that plumber use lubricating rubber seals, It was outside the store next to the drain pipes cost £6-£8

I hope this helps

So I thought I'd better post about the superb experience I had with Worthing Audi in the middle of last month. I wrote to Worthing in September about the possibility of having my Open Sky replaced under warranty. They were quick to respond and after all the relevant details were supplied confirmed that I had been accepted for the warranty change, meeting all the criteria - good service history, age of car etc.

They told me that they were fitting one a week and only had 3-4 weeks available over the next 3 months or so! I booked in for the middle of October, my brother took the car down for me as I had work commitments. They had no problem with this and supplied him with a A3 Cab courtesy car free of charge whilst the work was complete. He dropped the car off at 8am on the Monday and picked up at 5pm on the Tuesday. The results were fantastic, a very smooth, two stage, new design Open Sky. Everything was changed apart from the glass panels. They even fitted half of a new blind as I had previously done the de-blind mod!

Couldn't fault the whole experience, and it only cost around £150 for petrol and two nights accommodation for my brother down in Worthing! Can't complain really!

Cheers,
Rob.

Great thread I too have a broken sky and a 2001 car so out of warrantee. I got chatting to a guy on eBay selling a broken sky for parts and he said that he had just changed the entire unit and it was now working fine. Not a lot of detail but he said the roof lining needed removing then 20 or so 10mm nuts. The roof was only bonded at the back and you'll need 2 people to push it out he blended it down all the way around when he replaced it. Very helpful guy I'm just looking for a reasonable priced working roof to try it with. So there is hope!

Lovely people aren't they.
NOT.
Can't believe they actually have a business given how badly they treat their potential customers.

I had a run-in with BlueChipSpares a few weeks ago and he's still has rude and unhelpful as ever. I'm personally in favour of a boycott.

There's an OpenSky going on Ebay at the moment, but it's up to you to decide if you want to deal with the vendor or not!

The car looks to have leather seat and other nice options. It is also said to have a 'perfectly running' 1.4 petrol engine. Which means it was a running A2 that is being taken off road and slaughtered for rare parts at high prices. On that principle alone I'd boycott, the bad history of this seller just adds to it.

I've been following their sales on eBay over the last few months and am continuously dismayed by the irresponsible practices of BlueChipSpares. They break A2s with scratched bumpers. I wish there was a law against this or something we could do about it. But alas all we can do is agree not to buy from them.

Thanks Dan First guy I wont deal with for anything the second place looks ok but I'll probably track one down for a good price as I'm in no rush and there seems to be a lot of people breaking them at the moment - me included if I cant fix this dam power steering pump problem on A2 number 2!

I think the Nirro price isn't unreasonable to be honest when you consider the cost of getting the roof replaced by Audi (you're looking at £2k if you paid them to do it); the BlueChipSpares one certainly is unreasonable though!

Quick question: so that super fancy high-tech jig that Audi keeps talking about being needed when replacing an OSS could be in theory replaced by a helpful mate, hmm?

I have rung Audi in Huddersfield today to see if they could fix my open sky under warranty and they say there are no existing recalls for my car and i would have to book it in at the cost of £120 to see what the problem is and they will then approach Audi UK and see if it can be repaired as a goodwill gesture? Is it worth a go??
