Seduced by extras. Caveat emptor!

Hi all,

A bit of a tale of woe:-

Ever been seduced, I have. It's dolphin grey, OSS, leather seats with lumbar and winter pack. 4 electric windows, DIS, TDI and official tow bar. Wow! that ticks all the boxes. Goes and has a look, some rub marks but nothing that graft won't cure. One small dent in a door that is a barely noticeable. No MOT but i'm an engineer and this is a project car so no rush to get on the road. It came with a nice bit of history, the first owner picked it up direct from Audi and is complete with the original build slip. I would have been the third owner.

Gets it home today and pretty much what I thought, elbow grease already ordered - straight on to it and on to the ramp.

This is what I found:-

There seems to be a bit of a hole!!

sheesh, what the hell happened there?

That's looking from the rear of the car forwards, approximately at the seat position, in the middle, looking towards the passenger side of a UK car?

That's aluminum cut out. Why on *earth* would someone do that?

looks like the "old trolley jack" issue many a garage like to do on our a2,s if you don't inform them off correct jacking procedure, could be worse could have been the chassis, sounds like a lovely specced example look forward to pictures once that elbow grease does it,s work.

i was thinking plastic sill:eek: if that is what you say i'm confused to why and how.

Think you have it spot on:- Except it is the chassis, just inboard of the jacking point. How I missed on the look around, who knows. Just weighing up options at the moment. Not sure if there is a repair possibility. Not even sure how to search. The only saving grace is, that I have very little invested in it (in the great big scheme of things).

Its hard to say from the photo and its piddling it down outside so no chance of having a look see but that looks severe, even dangerous as theres a bottom wishbone/suspension mount just past the tear ,id say its repairable with a good welder as repaired worse, but may need to go on a jig for alignment checking as you have no idea how it happened or how long its been like it and the stearing geometry, wheel alignment could be all over the place and the A2 would crab down the road.

Perhaps they wanted a piece of alluminium to effect repairs on another car ?

What is the trolley jack issue?

What is the trolley jack issue?

The car being jacked up on a section of the spaceframe by a person who has no idea it's an aluminium shell. Not uncommon and results in broken sills and dented floor panels. Never known damage on the scale oneflewover has pictured though. Metal looks cut or torn out.

The damage depicted by your photo is of the right front section of your A2.
This particular area is a solid one-piece cast "node" and forms an integral part of the structure of the A2. I cannot imagine why such damage should be evident and as has been stated it appears to have been cut or ripped out.
You will probably find that this issue would be an immediate MOT failure and would require expert repairs - if at all possible! My concern would be that the vehicle is probably structurally unsound.

You are correct, definitely MOT failure and structually unsound. On a better look round today it looks like it has run over something. There are some light marks that line up with it from bottom of front bumper , bit of engine subframe and then out by the side skirt. Now i've removed the skirt and inner wheel arch the area is really accessible from all sides.

I'm going to explore the possibility of getting it welded. It is otherwise to good to break.

If you decide you don't want to fix it, I would imagine that this would mean the car isn't roadworthy. If that is the case, even if you bought it privately you should still be able to get your money back I'd think.

Find an MoT failure / Engine failure?

So I found a motorsport type garage

Who managed to weld plates in to the 3 sides that required it.

I then set out on the other jobs. Broken spring, ARB link, TRE and no hand brake

All straight forward and total cost less than I imagined.

Best have a look at the oil leak then:-

Yep that'll be charge air cooler, yes that is oil being blown from it. Took off the pipe and the inside is coated / running oil. So next job is turbo out for an examination.

Best move this to Current Projects!

The intercooler has a habit of splitting at the bottom, so you might want to examine that as well.
My turbo is a leaky one too, will at some point get a refurb job done on it.

wow, the start was difficult, but as I see now things have moved a lot! That's great! I think you're going to have an awesome a2 :) good luck :)

So a long list of jobs has been carried out

Burst Intercooler,
Door microswitch,
Under engine cover replaced,
Side sill replaced,
Glove box replaced
CCU replaced and keys matched,
windows reset,
Leather seats / carpets / plastics cleaned

Full service
MOT'd (no advisories)

Still to do:-
Fuel gauge not working
Front and rear bumpers require paint
Wheel refurb

Still in to it for less than £1000 so happy boy at the moment

and it makes so much difference to the way that you feel when driving the car doesn't it !

Well done, looking forward to seeing it.

Glad to see you are still continuing to the dream. They all take a little money to get right. But totally worth it.

A quick update on this.
Since completing the above jobs, which was done soon after, the car has cost me a broken rear spring and 2x oil change. That's it.
It failed once with poor earth for starter, but nothing on MOT's.

If a mod could move to Projects, I'm ready to spend some money on it.

Thanks
