It's the thermostat, dummy!

For quite a few years, I had no temperature on the dashboard gauge. Given the age of the vehicle, and what I've done in it, I just assumed 'something' was broken, but not serious, as it still ran ok. I had the temperature sensor changed, but that didn't make a difference. The fuel consumption went up as well, but again, it's an old warhorse, these thing happen.
But several things changed my mind. First was finding this place, and reading other's problems and the solutions, and second was the catastrophic coolant pipe failure I had at New Year. When that happened, the temperature sensor just about saved my engine by showing me that it was actually working.

So last week, I had a replacement thermostat fitted, and it's amazing! The engine now heats up to 90 in a few minutes, and stays there. I keep on looking to check, and it's still there at 90 degrees! Brilliant!

Also, the fuel consumption appears to have improved by about 10%. I can't really tell yet, as I haven't done that many miles, but it was up at 57mpg on the trip down the M6 yesterday.

All in all, very happy.

Think of all the fuel you've wasted

The temp sensor ‘just about’ saved your engine?!? Oh no! Did it not save your engine?

An issue with modern Smart MHD is there is no temp gauge at all - just a warning light. When the water pump belt snaps it inevitably takes out the sensor (which is in the line of fire for recoil) and you don’t get any warning of engine overheat. First warning is the engine going pop!
- that’s why I had to get the turbocharged version instead
