1.4 petrol bby engine

I’ve had this on 2 bby engine cars, one it was the crankpostion sensor (not the campostion as easily confused) and the other it was throttle body

I had exactly that on my BBY Engine. It’s all on these Forums somewhere a few years back. Went on for Months. It started when I had RAC come out to it only running on 3 Cylinders. RAC Man fitted a new Bougicord Ignition Coil. Went on for months after that with the Engine just randomly Cutting Out even when passing HGVs on the Motorway ! It was always accompanied by a lot of Warning Lights. Wife refused to drive the A2 any more. Plugging it in to Diagnostics at Harpers Cumbria found no faults. Tried New Crankshaft and Camshaft Sensors. Made no difference. What fixed it in the end was taking the Bougicord Ignition Coil off and replacing it with a new Genuine Audi Ignition Coil. Never Cut Out again since. Supposedly the new Bougicord Ingition Coil was Faulty, randomly sending some sort of electrical charge back to the ECU causing the Engine to Cut Out. I had a long running dispute with the RAC going right up to the CEO. They eventually admitted that it may have been that they had fitted a new part that was faulty but said they still were not liable.

Had very similar issues too which I believe were down to using cheaper ignition coils

I had the same thing happen lately. Only it's just for a split second, though it seems to be happening more often. Last night the rev counter went down to zero and stayed there, even though the engine was still running, along with the whole dash lighting up.
Not sure what to try, as i don't want to get into a game of changing all the ancilliaries on the thing trying to work out what it is.

Hi with no rev counter I would say the crank sensor has gone. It remained running by the ecu looking at the cam sensor readings. A scan should show the problem.

Ah ok thanks. The first times it happened, it was so quick that it didn't even make the engine light come on, so i'm not sure if it logged a fault even. Someone here has the diagnostic cable, so i'll get him to take a look. Thanks again!

So, it's a 16706, which is engine speed sensor, so it looks like you were right.
Next question, is this an easy thing to change, for the moderately inept DIYer, or is it buried under the motor somewhere?

Hello James

If you are happy working under your car with axle stands then you will be able to do this job.
There is a rubber cover that you can remove by hand to gain access to the sensor. Just follow the wire along the back of the engine to find it.
I think it's a 4mm Allen key that fits the sensor.
The bolt is captive so it wont fall out.

The electrical connection end of the sensor is slid on a two pronged holder like the one that holds the front lambda sensor on the exhaust manifold.

A torch and a telescopic mirror are handy

Sensor and rubber grommet removed

Use the ring spanner trick to get extra leverage on your long allen key when your removing the sensor

All the best andy
