Steering Column Switches.

Hi, I confess, I have given up, and returned the kit for a refund. I've ordered:

Radio out, plug and play. Good price too. Most importantly, no trim removal! Mac.

Have you returned it yet? I'd likely buy it if not.

The one I've returned is the one that needs half the car removed (and cable loom surgery) to fit it. The one in the ebay link is the one I've now ordered, it's plug & play. No difference in price either. Mac.

So this fits between the flasher relay and its loom connector?

The one I've returned has bare wires, that have to be spliced directly into the cable loom from the indicator stalk conector. That means accessing the loom by removing the steering column cowl (in turn, accessed by removing the air bag, and steering wheel). The cotton tape that binds the loom has to be cut back, and the three individual cables have to be teased out, before the cables from the blinker are spliced in, using Scotchloks, or similar. It may be possible to access the loom by removing the lower dash trim, but I don't know for sure. There is no connection to the flasher relay. Only one of the three cables that are spliced is present at the flasher relay (the common flash relay output), as far as I can see. The other two run from the indicator stalk switch to the right and left indicator lamp circuit.

The ebay device fits between the flasher relay and its connector,so only requires the radio to come out. I'm guessing it picks up the left and right indicator circuits via an isolation relay, and the hazard flasher circuit, but I'll let you know when it arrives.

I just didn't want the hassle of trim removal, let alone air bag and wheel removal! I'm sure I could have, but why spend hours when the same result can be achieved in 30 mins (that's about how long it took in my Mk1 TT)?
Mac.

@PlasticMac some pics would be very much appreciated as this is on my “nice to have” list that I’m getting close to starting once I’ve sorted the fuel flap button.

Help. 1.6fsi 2002 indicator problem. Lost direction and hazards totally. Found fuse blown replacing same hazards back working. Managed to connect new relay still no direction indicators. Any clues where I should look first, unfortunately Bose sound system, multi cd steering wheel radio controls restrict access.

Well looks like the switch is working. The relay is dual function, one for indicators and the other for the hazards. Not unheard of only one side failing. You could remove the relay and take it out of its case and clean all the contacts and check for bad solder or other electrical burning and repair what you find or just replace the relay. Not guaranteeing it is the relay but switch and fuses appear ok.

Sorry, forgot to say though unable to remove relay managed to unplug it and plug in one I bought from the forum. Still only hazards but is it likely that this replacement could also be faulty? I would hope so as I know where to source a replacement. Thank you for bothering to help me.

Yep getting the relay out of those damn retaining clips is literally a pain:eek: If you piggy back another one onto the connector, preferably a known fully working one that should help. Drop @timmus a note may well be able ( if available ) to give you any other pointers.

Thank you Audifan, will get a known good relay before I go any further, without the cubby hole to remove makes it even more dificult, piggy back will do me fine. Thanks again.
