Today I.....

Ya looks like wind / door mirrors where not needed in the film
The police car in front of the A2 doesn’t have any either

They are also considerably lighter, which helps massively, they do indeed share the winglets, every part of the underneath of the car is made flat with aluminium heat shielding, and they also have a spoiler behind the front undertray, on the underneath.
Clearly not something I can do to lighten my car then, I’ll have to just stick with driving as a van without rear seats, shelf and luggage cover if I want to make mine lighter. I want to try to crack 70mpg in my FSI without doing anything radical.

I doubt you'll get 70 out of it, but efficiency can definitely be improved, flattening the bottom of the car is achievable, you could also try to get yourself some aero parts, but they are quite hard to come by.

If you where a bmw driver you wouldn’t know how to use them or the indicators

Only joking before anyone takes offence

I thought it but wasn’t brave enough to say it. ?

Not a day goes by where people don’t observer the mirror, signal, manoeuvre order. Too many people (and yes more seem like BMW drivers) who manoeuvre without signalling or even looking in their mirrors. I have however seen an A2 driver do it though (a few years ago) and though at the time that his other car must be a BMW!

As @depronman says, please don’t take offence, I’ll vouch for one (yes only one!) BMW driver who was courteous and drove perfectly yesterday between York and Scarborough and was pleasantly surprised however when he over took me in his 320d coupe, I noticed the bumper and boot lid had a lamp post shaped dent in it and thought “you’ve ruined it now”!

I don’t do enough motorway journeys to justify getting aero parts, probably just easier to get a TDI. I just want to do do a 30+ mile journey and see what a possible max in an FSI could be in ideal conditions although appreciate it wouldn’t be normal as I usually have to cart stuff around.

I got 64mpg on a run on Thursday, 30 miles motorway and 10 miles town (which include 40 mph roads) two people in the car and two kids seats driving around 60mph. I did however have a tail wind which contributed. 6mpg extra could be achieved if I try harder and remove some weight, we’ll see.

Today I changed the thermostat for the 2nd time in 6mths, seems like the ECP one was only for summer use, as it ran at 80 in the winter. Gates one now fitted and it got up to 90 in a couple of miles nice, strangely on investigation the ECP one did have 87deg stamped on it, but it just wasn’t correct. View attachment 60891
New one supplier as below:

I had 2 ECP ones which I have replaced on my 90 which just didn’t work nicely, In the winter I have also now put a gates one on and has made a big difference

Excellent condition wing and door back on ?

Hoping to do the other side tomorrow night and maybe get the front end on.

Service, machine polish and a bit of titavating and she’ll be ready to do.

And now back in one piece and looks a peach

That’s what I thought, sheet of aluminium and Bob’s your uncle ?. Fixing it securely would the hardest part...

I think the wheel pokes out of the arch ever so slightly. You may have to run wheels with less offset and smaller tyres if you want to use a flat sheet.

There are pictures of a european A2 3L which has had various aero mods done to it. Im sure this is one of them.

Unlikely as tyres sticking out the arches are illegal.

Design classics...

A2 had to do bike duty, because my girlfriend's newly acquired Cactus doesnt have a split fold rear seat. I also decided it was time to stop messing about on a BMX and bought a very nice cruiser off eBay, although I do have to go to Worcester to get it.
