Plymouth. I'm looking for a garagist / mechanic / equipped workshop or ... other solution.

I have a set of 14 inch steel wheels with michelin alpin4 winter tyres on. These fit fine and were originally on a skoda fabia. The tyres are 2012 with a lot of tread on. I am happy to swop them or even sell them to you.
Your car does sound like a money pit. I would just sell it on and get a better one. I have a tdi which I have managed to keep on the road while doing the repairs. Generally, that is my rule of thumb, which is that significant amounts of time off the road are not worth it.
Sell it to who? I don't think I could do that and feel good about myself. The laquer has started to shed like dandruff lol. No I'll use it till it drops and just deal with what I can. Clutch is getting dicey now though and slips more and more. What size are the tyres on the 14" are they easy to come by and is there much choice out there? I think I'd prefer 15's but... why not?

They are 165/70 r14. if you use the short crossing, I am on the M2.

If I hadn't bought this one I'd go have a look but I don't want a diesel, I think that diesels are going to get hobbled by environmental taxes sooner rather than later. (tax us to save us from ourselves... hmm)
If I do go to Paigton (not likley just like that) then I could check it out. I think my car will be OK but it will take more of my time up sooner than I wanted. That's life in the fast lane, it's all go go go .... And if anyone from farawayland is curious about the car in the add I may be able to check it out for them... depends on time etc...

Oh and I didn't ask – what are the wheels? steels or alloy.

Hesketh - I've lost touch with what your main questions were. You have (from memory) a 160,000-odd mile AUA or BBY A2 that you are planning to use. Forget bodywork unless that is your issue - if they are running and looked after, A2s will last a good long while yet. With a little bit of basic fettling and a set of state-mandated winter-compatible tyres you will have a car that will do significantly higher mileage to Switzerland and back without issue for a while. I have two A2s that are well beyond this, at least one of which was mistreated for at least 50k (AUA now on 187k), and an AMF Tdi used for commuting on 287k (as well as a BHC used for long journeys and occasional around-town use approaching 135k).

I think and hope so too.

£700 for clutch + cam-belt/water pump. Local garage. I trust them. Thoughts on the price??
Depends on where the parts are coming from. If it's all Audi OEM/Luk, then sounds like a bargain imo. If it's all Euro/GSF, not so much, I think.
Mind you, prices, (and hourly rate) vary depending on where you are. My local indie would be close to that, without the clutch, he only uses genuine VAG parts.
Mac.

Concur with that. I would be expecting to look at least 500 quid for something involving clutch, even if I was supplying the parts (and I would have shopped around to get the Luk or whatever deemed to be best for the best price because my garage are good like that), let alone also the belts as well. Ironically I was just outside Plymouth over New Year visiting family - regular 550 mile drive down and back from Scotland a few times a year.

There have been a lot of 5x 100 wheels with varying qualities of winter tyres online in the last few months in the usual online places, no need to panic buy. For that matter though, with a little more effort, 16" SE rims appear here on A2oc regularly enough for silly prices like £10 a rim, so then finding an online set of suitable ex-lease-car tyres from Germany being sold off after one winter's compulsory use and 6-7mm tread left is a decent way to get a set of winter tyres significantly cheaper than normal UK new prices.

Finally got the codes read.
16825 Evap,
16524 o2 sensor left bank intermittent,
17604 o2 heater circuit malfunction P1196,
17588 o2 linear fault P1180,
17550 load calculation P1142,
17851 EGR g212 low P1443,

Thoughts?

I had trouble with the cable I bought of Fleabay, so I went to my local mecano'. He had trouble reading them too, 3rd scanner (a snap-on) worked (why the dificulty??) . Any Way. It doesn't look too bad to me. still drivable I rekon?? I replaced the rear suspension the other day and found a broken spring (the break was rusty so I think it'd been there for some time, who knows) The suspension was completely shot, rusty with no rebound at all. (how does it pass an MOT with that?) and I put some 15" steel wheels. The car is a lot more comfortable. Springs are in the post. The laquer on the other hand is dead, the car is now patchy matt pink and red gloss. I don't mind it's only paint.

Is it a 1.6fsi or 1.4i? On the FSI I’m quite sure all of those share a fuse

Hi Hesketh! I am based in Plymouth and looking for a similar thing. I like working on my cars but I live on a hill, with no off street parking and no cover so a lot of jobs aren't really practical to undertake. I have what I think are sticky turbo vanes at the moment and would love to do something about that but can't where it is. Actually, I have only had the A2 about a month and already had to replace the battery and starter motor, polish up the headlights, fix the wiper (although the damage is well and truly done) and I have a small laundry list of other jobs that need sorting! If you find anywhere covered with a lift, please let me know! I would also recommend SLC garage out at Plympton. They have been working on my cars for 12 years or so now (BMW/Audi/Ford) and always do me a good deal and the work is second to none!
I've found a carlift to use which is cheap cheap but it's outside. For better weatherdays but good to know about if you need.

Hi Hesketh, Robwick, just seen your posting, I'm in Plymouth too, recent owner of A2Steve's cracking little TDI90, I too would be interested if you have somewhere with access to a lift for the inevitable ongoing maintenance.
