Greetings all,
I don’t have an A2 however i have always found myself looking at them
They certainly stand out in the plethora of
New cars that all look the same.
I’am currently researching at the moment
And squirrelling away as much money as i can.
Undecided as to which engine would be
the one to go for.
I do like diesel for the torque.
My preference with the colour is Met Grey
with red leather
I’m in no rush and would rather purchase a well sorted car with mileage below 80k
As i’d like to keep the car for a good few years.

ps, thanks Darren for sorting the
Confirmation email etc.

Best regards
Adam

Welcome Adam, you have come to the best forum for advice and "how to".
I run a Grey Tdi with red leather interior. It's my favourite. Read as much as you can on here, although the best way to find what you want is via google. Prefix any questions with A2oc and read........

Welcome aboard Adam, and you’re very welcome.

There‘s an abundance of information here to wet your appetite and help tease out which model is right for you. If you haven’t already done so, you can upgrade your account to give you access to the marketplace. This costs £2 and will open up members cars that might be up for sale, spotted A2s for sale and parts etc. If of interest, click on your name in the menu at the top of the page and it is an option from within there.

Most things have been discussed, some many times over, google plus the word ‘A2OC’ can sometimes yield better results than the search engine here.

Good luck in your search and congratulations on setting your sights on an A2. They are infectious little blighters, but you’re amongst friends here. ?

Thanks for the welcome,
I have already paid the fee.
don’t worry I will read as much as i can and take it from there.
Darren to be honest
I think it will most likely be the diesel 75bhp.

Welcome aboard Adam, I have to agree grey is the best colour for a A2 ;) This is Flipper my Dolphin grey TDi Sport 75 mapped to 105 it's got the black/grey alcantara interior. Don't be put off with high miles he's now done 170k, still runs and pulls like a train and doesn't use a drop of oil between services and the interior shows no or very little wear.

That‘s the engine sorted, you just need to decide on standard/special edition, sport, se, or storm trim and narrow down what options are essentials for you such as climate control, leather, open-sky, whether 4 or the rarer 5 seats are needed etc. Many options can be retrofitted, but some such as the aforementioned climate control and open-sky are not conventional upgrades. A 4 seater cannot be converted to 5 either, of course you might already know all of this.

For the diesels especially, service history and condition can be a better indication than mere miles alone. They are fairly bullet-proof and can be re-mapped for extra poke again.

Darren,
I don’t mind rolling up my sleeves and working on a car myself.
And I’m certainly not put off purchasing one with cloth interior, however I would be keeping my eyes open for the Red leather.
now with regards to high mileage cars
I will happily consider one
However i would prefer if the usual suspension upgrades etc have been done.
Come across this on eBay.

Thanks for the welcome.
Any A2 is worth considering
The Grey just looks right though.

Not looked at the car yet but be aware this is a new eBay seller with zero previous sales. - Andy

Edit. Welcome by the way.

It might be worth looking through the Projects part of the forum for inspiration/ideas on what is available/possible.

I’ve been looking quite a bit on here,
Narrowed down my preference’s
1.4 Tdi Preference 75 bhp
Grey
Black or Red leather interior
Don’t want Oss
Would like to find a low mileage or a very well maintained serviced car

Mods i would like would be
Full suspension
Remap by stealth
I would also like the 6spd conversion
Maybe a hybrid turbo rebuild and a suitable intercooler to match.
Not interested in crazy power
Would rather have 100 - 110 hp
and it be reliable.

Things to research
Rear disc instead of drums worth considering?

anyone want to add the must have items?
thanks

You'd get the 100-110bhp from a TDI75 with the remap alone, before you even start down the turbo/intercooler route. I should think that'll save you the money to pay for most if not all of the 6-speed conversion. Many FSI and TDI90 owners have to replace corroded rear discs and sticking rear calipers because there isn't really a lot for them to do on the back of these cars. They're so light at the back that drums are really all that's needed however hard you drive it.

For me, apart from climate control, the only must-have is lumbar front seats. This mostly means Sport seats (with the larger bolsters) as not many of the standard (SE) seats had the lumbar. If you do get a Sport model it will also come with the DIS (trip computer) which is a nice-to-have. However the original Sport wheels were 17" which look great, but ride harshly and are prone to buckling. 16" from an A1 or an early TT are good substitutes.

Once you've found the right car, I'm sure you'll end up talking to @timmus about cruise control and the BOSE sound upgrade - both are well worth having, some would say indispensable.

Best of luck with your search!

Just to echo what Ian said above. I have a Tdi75 and an FSI. As far as brakes go, stick with rear drums, far better on the handbrake than discs.
Stealth remap will be specific to your car, so would suggest an EGR delete, simple on the AMF engine, or fit a custom blank unit from @depronman. This will improve airflow, but do this before the remap.
My Tdi Sport is a Dolphin Grey, non OSS, 5 seater with red leather. Also have 6 speed MYP gearbox. Love it to bits!

Brilliant thanks for adding to
Ian’s suggestions.
Certainly sounds a better idea to leave the
Rear brakes alone.
With regards to the 6spd is there only one option available?

There are others. Vince at Stealth would be able to elaborate.

Hi Adam, and welcome to A2OC.
With regards to the 6spd is there only one option available?
There are basically two methods of upgrading to 6 gears. One method is to simply swap the whole gearbox for a 6-speed 'box with appropriate ratios. By far the most common 6-speed gearbox used is the MYP gearbox from a 2012 Passat. The other method adds a 6th gear to your existing 5-speed gearbox, which is detailed in this thread: https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/gearbox-recondition-and-6-speed-conversion.21523/

There are pros and cons to both methods.

The MYP gearbox is designed for cars that use a dual-mass flywheel and that use the ABS system as the instrument cluster's source of speed information. In other words, the bell-housing is deep, to accommodate a dual-mass flywheel, and there's no speed probe/sensor inside the gearbox itself. The only A2 that fits this criteria is the TDI90. All TDI75s use a single-mass flywheel, and earlier TDI75s need a speed probe/sensor inside the gearbox in order to get road speed information. As such, in order to make the MYP gearbox compatible with the TDI75, some swapping of gearbox components is required. This additional work can add to the costs of the upgrade significantly.
The MYP gearbox uses a shorter shift gate, which translates to a shorter throw at the gearknob itself. Some don't like this, as it can make the gear change even more notchy than it is already. Also, the gears are arranged inside the gearbox in a conventional order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), meaning that the tallest gear is right at the end of the shafts, as far from the clutch as possible, which is less than ideal as it increases the strain on the shaft bearings.

Adding a 6th gear to your existing gearbox is, I believe, the more elegant solution. However, you need to have confidence in the good condition of your existing gearbox, and it's a costlier option. The gears are arranged inside the gearbox as follows: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 5. The result is that the tallest gear sits evenly between two of the three shaft bearings. Also, the 6th gear is marginally longer, meaning lower revs once motorway cruising.

Once you've found the right car, I'm sure you'll end up talking to @timmus
Thank you, Proghound, for the recommendation. Once the Covid-19 crisis is over, and Boris has let us all out to play again, my A2 upgrade service will be back in full swing. Let me know your wish-list of optional extras, and I can make it happen.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks for all the response
A good bit of reading to do.
I’m not in a rush to purchase a car,
And would rather wait until the right car comes up.
Since I’am up in Aberdeen it is quite a trek
down to view and possibly purchase.
I do know that a timing belt, water pump remap and suspension would be a priority
So i would need to have the cash available for all that to be done ASAP.
Any thoughts on powerflex bushes?
makes more sense if changing the suspension to do everything else.
