More advice req'd Please x

Hi Gang

After being proper shafted by Halfrauds, New rad, intercooler, lower arm, bushes, cylinders, fluids....i get my baby back, drain 7.5ltrs of oil out of her, so, i change all filters, new oil, remove all pipes, vaccum hoses, replace, and flush what i can, now spotless, removed turbo, egr, both clean as, but, still smoking, as i cant take her out, and give her a blast, is there anything else i can check? could the cat be knackered, could there be oil in there? any pointers welcomed, i have since sourced a proper tool kit now, most things i have a thingy for..lol

I really want to keep her, but, money pit at mo, i can hear an E46 330 touring calling !!

What type of smoke and when? Still think it just needs a good run to blow everything through. I would suggest using a bottle of Cataclean or econmotive's Clean Drive. This is placed in the fuel tank and when burnt is clears out some carbon etc from the cylinder head all the way through the turbo ( exhaust side only ) EGR and exhaust including the catalyst. Which ever you choose to use you must follow the instructions. Why can't you take it for a good run?

Yeah say you drained 7.5L of oil out that’s a lot, what’s the story behind that?

The little bit on the dipstick was missing, obviously, Halfrauds have topped it up, even thou i didnt ask for it, thing that pisses me of is that all it had was a slight oil leak before i took it to them

Was it smoking before this?

Nope, the day before, it was nipping about fine.

Then I think you just need to drive it for long journey and burn off the oil that has gotten into places it shouldn’t have, how long did you drive it before draining it?

Thats my problem, Halfrauds had it 5 weeks, during that time, the mot ran out, so, i had to get it Low Loaded back home, now, i cant taker her out, and give it a blast, all im doing at the mo, is pissing my poor neighbours off with smelly white smoke!

Gov has given extensions to MOT so if it ran out after covid you are still ok. You may be able to enter the car details into the gov website to check the MOT

Ran out Feb 18th, thats how long they've had it, blamed it on parts, the pipe that comes of the rad apparently is no longer made

Acrid white smoke is normally related to unburnt fuel which vapourizes and produces the smoke.
If you could find a test station which is open and book a test, that would be a legal way to drive the car then if the smoke does not clear on the way, phone up and cancel it

Cheers Spike

Hi Spike

Thanks for taking the time to read, as im a novice, what would cause unburnt fuel like that? im just trying tio suck in as much info as poss.

Thanks mate

iv not long given my a full service and it took 5l to fill from empty, I hope u haven't blown all the seals out of it, is there any sign of a miss fire at all I had a a3 tdi before and I had a problem with it filling the sump up with diesel what cause a engine run away, when u cleaned the turbo was there any play in it ? is the water ok ? does it get up to temp correctly and sit there nicely, white smoke to my mind is turbo fail, head gasket or way to much oil what you already said but did Halfords say they put the oil in?

Your account of this seems inconsistent.

You have previously told us that you called the AA out because your car was leaking oil before you ever went to Halfords. If your car was fine, why on earth did you call the AA?

It appears that even then, your MoT had already expired, and that the car hadn't been serviced since you bought the car in 2018.

It would certainly help if you give us a clear timeline of events.

When i say FINE, i meant it wasnt smoking,

Full account, on the 16th feb, i used the car to nip to Lakeside, 15 miles away, no problem at all, came out next morning 17th to go to work in my van, noticed a liquid under the car, called AA, they said it was the crank Oil seal, they advised immediate recovery to their garage of choice, as im under the Parts and Warranty scheme, AA realyed me to garage, prior to that the AA guy started it, gave it some beans, whilst plugged in to his OBD, there was no smoke, from that point on is where it all goes tits up. They MOT'd it after the stitch up, failed on emissions, due to ancrid smoke, 5 weeks later, i had it low loaded back home.

I may be a bit dappy with accurate logs, and im sorry for that.

Water is fine, as i had new Rad, an intercooler, halfords checked all that, Turbo is fine, and stable, you mention runaway engine, i did experience a sudden burst of revs on my way back from Lakeside, it just sort of took off on the M2, then, calmed down after a second or two,

So when had you last had the car serviced?

runaway engine It basically runs on its own engine oil, normally because there diesel leaking into the sump filling it up and it gets to a point it will just take off on its own, very scary I might add, this in turn lead to the car pumping out loads of white some and stunk of fuel, so if it was my car id be looking at getting a leak of test and taking it from there as it will just do another run off and next time you might not be so lucky and end up with a blown engine
