More advice req'd Please x

Ive ordered some cataclean, gonna chuck that thru first, see if it make any difference.

Sorry to counter the advise on here but if you Cataclean it at this stage all you've done is introduce another element of un-known: is it now smoking because it's got Cataclean in it, or because of residual oil, or because it's got other issues?

I'd do your testing as far as you possibly can. Ideally getting it to point of seeming to drive O.K. and nicely settled down and use the Cataclean as your final, final fine tune / mopping up. It's not going to suddenly scour out tons of oil from the exhaust for instance. Think of it as the final layer of polish.

Im just clutching a straws mate, 1st sensible step is getting somewhere to gently drive it in, then, i'll take it from there, thanks for taking time to reply mate.

Its just finding private ground to gently work her up. I can get it low loaded, what about a rolling road?

I did wonder that, but you might find you need hours, not minutes on there. Also, IF you can find somewhere yourself you're not handing your baby over to someone who might get carried away and just plant the throttle. After all, under these circumstances, it's not their problem if it goes bang.

Not only that, but it's money again. There must be somewhere that has a bit of space within a few miles.

Anyway, you know my views: careful testing on your own terms having found somewhere quiet and non-highway. Free, controllable, sensible.

I had a stuck breather valve in the rocker cover a few years ago with a 130 tdi. I only found the solution as I failed to re-seat the rocker cover after inspection. This relieved the crankcase pressure and it was fine. Easy check to see if excess crank case pressure is causing oil to leak from the turbo into the hot exhaust. Go for a little drive (or even tickover) with the oil filler cap loose. Maybe put a cloth over the filler cap. If no smoke then you have a blockage somewhere in the crankcase breather system.

When I had smoke billowing out the last thing I expected was the rocker cover breather mechanism, but that's what it was.

I need to find a farmer, who wont mind me poodling around his land, not much else around me to be honest, think i'll be buying another 330d touring in the meantime.

I have smoke coming out from the oil cap whilst ticking over, and the dipstick pipe, so, thats a good sign is it?

Not necessarily. Once the diostick is pulled or the cap released, then the breathing system is upset.
Not sure if the Tdi engines run with positive or negative crankcase pressure. If positive then you will always see vapour emitted from dipstick or filler once undone. I will go and have a look at mine!

Thank you so much

Do you need to go to your nearest MOT station? I hadn’t heard that. I thought it was just required to be pre-booked for the MOT.

My nearest is a Kwikfit but I’d always go to the actual garage a mile away instead.

Best I never run my MOT out...

Ok, so fired up my Tdi and at cold idle pulled the dipstick. No apparent gas movement, either in or out. No oil mist coming out, but then with a cold engine I didn't expect any.
Revved up and looked again, no change, or evidence of oil being ejected. On my own I cannot rev it and look at the dipstick tube!
You have got me curious now, so when time allows I must rig up a manometer and measure crankcase pressure. If I can find enough tubing I could see the reading from the drivers seat!

No, you can use any MOT station in the country, to be legal you just need to have pre-booked an appointment.

I once heard about a bloke who lived down South who bought a car from somewhere in Scotland. He got pulled over not long after picking it up and even though he had booked a MOT at the test station near his house more than 200 miles from where he was pulled, the copper had no choice but to let him continue!

Well I never, after all these years in the trade it seems I've been wrong all this time.

I'm amazed, for the very reason you give in your example. Even so, it's still a legal requirement that the vehicle meets the appropriate standards (including excessive smoking, the car that is, not as in B&H).

Hi Spike

Thanks for taking the time to read, as im a novice, what would cause unburnt fuel like that? im just trying tio suck in as much info as poss.

Thanks mate

Unburnt fuel can be caused by anything which affects combustion or an injector fault which overfuels the engine.

White smoke is often worse when the engine is cold as good combustion needs heat

Some examples reported by owners -

Turbo problems - https://www.a2oc.net/community/inde...smoke-now-wont-start-solved.39835/post-353866

Bent conrods ( which effectively lower the compression ratio - https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/stuck-in-a-flood.24173/post-189455

Failed EGR - https://www.a2oc.net/community/inde...smoke-now-wont-start-solved.39835/post-359422

Injectors - https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/tdi-90-103k-white-smoke.25854/post-205144

Thanks Spike, Swanley is only 15 mile from me, I'll give Spence at VASS a call, and see what he suggests.

UPDATE, ive been running her every other night for an hour, much to my neighbors horror, for almost 3 months now, and, finally, after shes warmed up, no more stinking smoke, i bought one of those cheap £30 odb readers, comes up MAS air flow meter, Misfire in cylinder 1, thats it, so, hopefully, i can book in MOT with VASS, and thrash the remaining s**t thru the system, and let spencer crack on with it.

I had the same misfire no.1 required injector harness connectors tightening

How odd, I was only thinking of you over the weekend and assumed you'd left A2 ownership and wondered what happened.

Delighted to hear of the progress and good luck at the MOT ?

Try wiring first to injector first, the connectors work slightly loose! A recently did a thread as it was triggering my abs/tc lights.
With a bit of faffing it seems to cured having covered 70 miles since repair.
Great vid on youtube which has also been linked to in the thread (albeit a golf but same issue)
