Battery recommendations.

After 16.5 years the original battery is now struggling to hold a charge.

Any recommendations for a replacement make? It is a 1.4 TDI Nov 03.

Also will the radio (RNSE & keys need recoding)? If so, any smart ways to avoid?

Thanks

You probably want a Varta F19, depending on the size of your original battery. Post a photo of your current battery here for confirmation.

Cheapest on eBay right now:

Your radio should be okay, but you may well need to resync the keys to get the remotes working. Straightforward, takes seconds.

Everyone is different when it comes to batteries. PERSONALLY I can recommend these.

Radio / sat nav should be ok with no code needed. Clock will need resetting, electric windows may need resetting. Keys sometimes need to be reset but not always. You can buy a little battery the clips over the car battery leads to stop this but as it only takes a few minutes I would not bother.

I recently posted at my surprise how my A2 came with a Yuasa battery of an indeterminate age and it’s ability to start the car having sat for a few months! Reasonable price too

Thanks for the replies. Varta has got a lot of votes but the Yuasa is at a similar price point. Once I wake up I'll go and check the size.

Next job is changing the new wiper arm I bought 3 months ago- Can it be done without a puller?

Yes it can. Undo both nuts, but dont remove. Hinge wiper up vertically, then give a sharp pull away from the windscreen.

Why don't you remove the nuts? is it just to protect the thread?

Teeth intact, as despite an overnight soaking in WD40, it will not budge. Just ordered a puller.

They are always a pain to get off, even loads of grease or copperslip does not seem to help. I just keep slightly rocking and gentle pulling it, it always lets loose.

My TDI battery is absolutely dead! Have read this and other threads. Should I replace with Varta E44 or F19?

This is presumably the original battery?

Just a follow up. Battery eventually arrived today from Tayna. From my research the Varta F19 appears the top choice, but money is tight at the moment, so bought the Exide 110TE Premium, which is same spec as F19 (85Ah & 800A) but with only a 4 year guarantee as opposed to 5 years on the Varta. However the price after discount was £60, so a lot cheaper. Better value? Who knows ask me in 4 years and one week:D
