Auto headlight conversion with coming home/ leaving home lights

Deciphering the instruction sheet on these Auto Headlamp kits is pretty much impossible and so I have been "experimenting".

User rgh-key has helped on an earlier post too)

I can't say I have managed to interpret them, but I have made SOME progress and found SOME features.
By the way, I believe that the "Width" lamp mentioned on the sheet refers to the "sidelights", the "Low beam" is the headlamps.

After MUCH experimenting I was left with a problem, my sidelights were constantly on even in bright sunshine.
I had almost given up and put it down to a fault but I discovered the way to reset everything back to factory settings.
Hey presto, everything was reset and everything went back to standard.

1. So the most useful one is this factory reset.
To do that you have the ignition off (always have the key out when you do any settings that need the ignition off)
This is not an exact science but you need to switch between off and auto reasonably quickly.
If you have done it right the "front fog" indicator on the headlamp ring should flash a few times. That indicates the resetting back to "factory" settings.
You might need to try it a few times and with varying pauses, but it will work. (After resetting you may need to do the following to get it operational again) Ignition on. With the switch in the OFF position, switch to Auto and then back to off.

2. Auto headlamp delay -The same sequence carried out with the ignition ON, will adjust the auto light delay. This is useful if your auto headlights are coming on even if you have just gone under a very small bridge rather than a tunnel.
I set mine to a 5 second delay. All that does is to delay the lights from coming on or going off for 5 seconds. It has nothing to do with sensitivity etc.
With it set to 5 seconds you are less likely to appear to be flashing the car in front (my reason for changing this setting)
So switch the ignition on and quickly move from off to auto to off again, the "front fog" indicator will flash to show the setting you have selected.
1 flash is a 1 second delay, 2 flashes indicates a 3 second delay and 3 flashes indicates a 5 second delay.

3. Coming home / leaving home light delay - to lengthen the amount of time they are on for follow this sequence.
The ignition has to be off and the key out
Start with the switch in the OFF position, then go OFF to Auto to OFF to Auto to OFF you will now notice the fog light pulsing a green lamp, count these, it's the amount of seconds that the lights stay on for, once you have the required amount turn the switch to AUTO to confirm.

4. Sidelight sensitivity
I have tried this and it does seem to change the setting but I am not sure if it makes much difference.
Ignition ON, switch to sidelight position, move to headlight position and return (quite quickly). The front fog indicator will flash a number of times to indicate the change.

5. Headlamp sensitivity
Ignition ON, start at the headlamp position and switch to sidelights and back (quite quickly). The front fog indicator will flash a number of times to indicate the change.

6 "Auto" fog lights ???.
Not sure why you wouldn't just pull up the switch? When I tried to set them onto Auto, the front fogs were on while driving (might be like DRLS?)
to switch on or off the front fogs do the following.
Ignition ON, turn to the sidelight position , then to Auto and back to sidelights quickly and the fog lamp will indicate the setting. Your front fogs will be on.

7 "Manual" Fogs ON and Off
(not sure why you don't just pull the switch up and down as usual?)
Ignition ON, switch set to Auto, move to sidelights and back quickly and your front fogs will stay on. (auto to Off and back again to do the same for the rear fog lamps)

I hope this helps?

At least you can experiment now you know how to do a factory reset?

Do you have any of these still available Steve?

Sorry not any more. The interest died down and so it was not enough for me to do another bulk buy. But the link to the advert should still be there, or just look on eBay (it might be listed as a VW Golf mark four switch just visually check by comparing the connector on the back and you should be able see the large oblong connection that is on the A2 and mark four Golf.

Let me know if you are not sure or cannot find one and I will see what I can do to help.

This is the item number you need 152371407926 cost me £25 free post and was here within a week from China, Ebay still says expected May 2nd! Works perfectly.

Thanks for confirming that.

And you get a brand new headlamp switch (over £100 from Audi) and it has the fog light function if you have retrofitted them !

Real value for money.

Following a quick conversation on the " today i" thread I thought id bring up the question yet again of the rear fog tell. I know of one other person in addition to me who had an mot fail due to the auto switches not having a notable rear tell light.

You could argue the tester in my case was being overly fussy but it is the letter of the law so no complaints.

So I bought the same switch as the one talked about on the early pages of this thread. For sure I only get a single light coming on at the first pull (front fogs) with the furthest down tell light on the switch not activating when the second pull should activate for rear fog ... it only seems to be used to indicate light programming.

So I guess 2 things to look at here then.

1) anything im doing wrong In setup of the switch that will allow rear fog tell, or indeed any tricks i can apply to move the tell from front to rear fog tell.

2) could there be different versions of the switch? I tried contacting the seller and they have no clue they just say "read description it's all there" and "we sell loads" . Scripted answers from sellers who evidently have no knowledge about what they are actually selling it seems.

Thoughts?

Hi
There are no tricks or settings that I am aware of to enable this.

I think that perhaps I was mistaken about the way that the fog lights operate.
I thought that the first pull switched on the REAR fog lights and the second pull switched on the fronts. Since only the rears need a warning light I thought it was all fine. Looks like I was wrong and the first pull switches on the front fogs? Is that right (I haven’t checked). If so then yes it would be an MOT fail. But for £10 or so you could buy some non fog front surrounds and it take two minutes to pop them on for the MOT.

As for the safety aspect I am not advocating anything dangerous here, because the whole point of the warning light is to prevent people leaving the fogs on for days. In our case the fogs self cancel when you return the headlamp switch to Auto and you get the lights on warning if you don’t return it to auto.

So this is one of the easiest solutions if you are worried about failing the MOT for this.

Ok cheers Steve I guess that pretty much closes the question down that I had - back to plan A and swap back for MOT like I did last time around to get it through.

It is worth pointing out that the physically similar OEM light switch in the Citigo (so presumably also VW Up and maybe other small VAG cars) with front and rear fogs only illuminates a logo in the casing ring when the front fogs are switched on ; not when the rears are as well : there is no 'tell' on this as installed. It has passed a couple of times without any quibble whatsoever. I only realised this last week after reading this thread now and again but not having driven it recently. This does tend to suggest that the problem is with your MOT examiner's interpretation rather than the switch itself.

@Birchall

I would like to have sidelights on at all times while ignition is on, is that possible?

I get two flashes when I check the sidelights setting, but how do I adjust the setting (to presumbly one flash)?

Steve (Birchall) may see you question over time but he doesn’t spend as much time on here these days.

Hopefully someone with the same switch will be along time assist in due course. I’m actually unable to help as I further upgraded 2 years ago to the Bluetooth version where you can adjust all the setting on a phone app.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom, have you got a link to the Bluetooth version please?
Mac.

Hello Mac,

Hope you’re well.

Here a picture of what I purchased back in 2018:

I upgraded from the non Bluetooth version after fitting an auto dimming rear view mirror and haven’t looked back since. Being able to adjust the auto on function along with other settings is so much easier than having to do it manually with constant twists of the headlamp switch.

The item number in the above image doesn’t work but the same seller has this new item number for sale. Link here. The item I got from this seller has the addition of the correct illumination for both front and rear fogs.

With a little dermal work you can also add the new icon ring that it comes with so you have the correct icon for what is selected. Additionally you can purchase for very little money an aluminium ring to make it look even better and hide any flaws in the cutting/dermal process. It was an hours work which was so satisfying once completed. Picture below of finished mini project:

Hope this helps.

The non bluetooth version I have does this via changing the sensitivity setting - ie turn sensivity all the way down and the sidelights come on with ignition and stay on no matter what. This is how I've had mine setup from day one to provide DRL capability - and I've got good quality LED w5w bulbs in there that provide a good strong light.

Thanks Tom. Keep calm, and drive an A2!
Mac.

I’ve been looking for one of these as well, thanks for the link Tom.

Does anyone know where to get the aluminium ring from?

eBay agin. Just cooking dinner so will get back to you in an hour or so. There is quite a few people who have completed this task who might be able to answer your question whilst I sort out the families empty bellies.

Kind regards,

Tom
