Digital fan display bars have a mind of their own.

If you look at this video ( for a Polo ) at 5:45 he releases the plug. Can not remember if it is 6 or 7 screws..

Fan is out. I’m spraying some WD40 and spinning it although it’s not a completely free spin, it has some tension although mild. Is this normal?

Reread post #3. How dirty is the hamsters wheel it should be white. It is best to completely remove from the housing. Do this by looking at the black plastic side and you will see 4 little rubber legs protruding through the plastic equally spaced around the motor. Push each of these inwards and lift the motor and wheel out of the housing. Give everything a good clean and spray with WD40. you will see how the cable fits into the housing. Make sure when you are happy it is clean and rotating well that you fully locate the 4 lugs through the housing and are fully locked in place. If you do not do this the assembly sits too high and will catch on the other half when it tries to spin. A tip is to take a photo of each stage as you take things apart, that way you have a reference when rebuilding it.

You can test it by plugging it back in before you refit it into the other half housing. Be careful not to get your fingers in the wheel. I took about 40 minutes cleaning spraying and rotating my one before trying it out. When you reconnect it while still out turn on the blower, if it does not spin try giving it a slight nudge. If it then spins a bit more cleaning and hopefully OK. If not either the motor or the resistor has gone. Personally cleaned 3 and the 3 worked afterwards.

This is what I see now. Sorry, I’m not sure I can see any legs.

OK rotate the housing so that the hamsters wheel is pointing away from you and the lump holding the motor part is towards you. Now if you look at the motor part and rotate it around itself down near where the motor joins the rest of the housing you will see 4 slots the "locks" are in the base of these slots.

Bingo. Thanks soooooooo much. I’m in the process of cleaning it now. I’ve sprayed loads of WD40 whilst spinning the fan. I left it for about 5 minutes and then started to spin and spray. Fingers crossed and thanks to all if you for your kind help.❤️❤️❤️

Electric drill on a slowish speed to rotate as you spray the lower end nearest the motor to get the lower bearing. High speed will fling the WD40 and everything else everywhere.
Just check it is working by plugging it in before you refit to the car.

BTW. You are welcome.

I plugged it in and it spins intermittently with help then stops. I’ll try the drill technique now.
