Timmus in the South East

I have a cruise control kit that needs installing, kind of defeatist getting someone else to do it but time is tight and I suspect it would take you less than half the time it would take me. Let me know if you have a spare couple of hours in Essex.

Tom as i said to you outside your house on monday afternoon thanks for all your help with our cars and i wish you all the best mate on your trip to the other members down south (try not to work too hard) and once your energy is exhausted have a brilliant trip into the mountains for your "2nd love" and i personally look forward to you carrying out other improvements to our A2s.

Hi Andy,

I suspect you're right that I'll be able to do the job a little quicker. Having installed cruise control in hundreds of A2s, I can do it, to perfectionist standards, in my sleep. :)
I'm happy to install a cruise control kit that you supply, assuming that the wiring loom is correct (which it so frequently isn't - because eBay sellers erroneously believe that they can rebrand anything for a Mk4 Golf as compatible with the Audi A2). If needs be, I'll just use one of my own wiring looms.

Let me know if you have a spare couple of hours in Essex.
On this occasion, I'm not doing a retrofitting tour but rather temporarily relocating my workshop to Ian's house in Leighton Buzzard. I shan't be doing household-to-household tours until the Covid-19 pandemic is a little further into history.
Leighton Buzzard is within easy striking distance of Chelmsford. Given that cruise control is a relatively quick retrofit, I'll certainly be able to squeeze you in.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom, I wonder if when you're in the S.E., that you might be able to sort out that blue coolant pipe that needs to be replaced? Thanks, David
That task hasn't fallen off my radar, but the manufacturer is not based in the South East, so this trip does not present an opportunity.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom

if you can fit in my wife’s Xcarlink issue that would be great. Let me know if I need to buy a Mike (and which one) for the phone.
Also I just managed to buy a complete rear parking sensor loom. If you could find time just to do the necessary wiring, I can then buy the sensors ant fit them at a later stage. I will also buy the controller.
Cheers

Hi Tom,
Unfortunately, I don't have time to get to Leighton Buzzard, but let me know next time you're doing a tour and if I haven't fitted it by then we'll arrange something.

Thanks

Andy

Steve,

Here I have a spare A2 PDC Control Module and a Xcarlink microphone. The PDC Module is from an additional kit I purchased which I was going to attempt front PDC with. The Xcarlink microphone is the one which came with the unit, I’m going to remove it shortly as I think I’m up for the retrofit challenger of the factory Bluetooth module. I’ll purchase this next week and fit it next weekend.

If you’ve already made other arrangements just let me know and I’ll get them into storage in the gagrge ready for another time/project.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom (2Work)

Thank you for that.
I have just this second ordered the 4 new sensors, sensor holders, beeper and used control unit from eBay (total of £40, so not too bad). But thanks for the offer.

As for the microphone, yes please. I can pay you via PayPal if you PM me your details.
Do you have my address (I think you do?)
Thanks again

I'd definitely like to be added to the list but it's lower priority if you need to choose.
It's the front fogs that need fitting. I have the parts and the switch it's just the wiring in etc...

OK, noted, thank you. I'll be in touch should there be a change in circumstances.

That should be possible. The schedule is rapidly approaching Full with a capital F, but I ought to be able to squeeze this in. :)

Hi Steve,

As you may have read in prior posts, I'm not on a household-to-household tour but am based in Leighton Buzzard. Will you be able to bring Joan's car to me? I have a few XCarLink microphones in stock.

Is the PDC retrofit also on Joan's car, or on your A2? I have never used a pre-purchased PDC loom. Perhaps you could send me a few photos such that I can get an idea of how the manufacturer intended it to be installed. I usually supply my own looms for this job, as they're inch-perfect for the A2. Buying pre-made looms is often a false economy, as they require a lot more of my time to figure out, modify and install than my own systems.

Cheers,

Tom

Whilst I appreciate that the sole intention here is to provide help, please may I be given the opportunity to respond to enquiries that are directed at me before alternative arrangements are offered?

Thank you,

Understood Tom,

As you know, just trying to help as Steve has been a massive help to me since I’ve been frequenting this forum.

I’ll step away and let you sort the @Birchall request for parts.

Kind regards,

Hi
Tom ok I wasn’t sure if it was a stationary one or not.
The Rear PDC is on my car the Xcarlink is on Joan’s car. So that would be two trips.

the genuine loom was just £15 so I thought “why not”. If I would have thought about it then I would have just asked you to produce it.
Leighton Buzzard is about an hour from me so if you have slots then I would bring them one at a time if that is ok?

cheers

Hello good people of A2OC,

Since the easing of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, I've only been working on A2s from home. I'd like to thank everyone who has brought their A2 to me and kept me (extremely!) busy during these times of great uncertainty.

I'm acutely aware that I still owe a number of club members replies to their messages. Unfortunately, being my own secretary, I can struggle to reply to private messages promptly when work is busy. Rest assured, no message goes unanswered and I will get back to you. Thanks for your patience.

Before this unusual year draws to a close, I need to seize the opportunity to climb a few mountains. Those who have met me are probably aware that, outside A2s and professional audio systems, mountains are a great passion of mine. I shall be sailing from Dover to continental Europe on Friday 4th September, where I shall find much larger mountains than those in the UK.

Prior to that sailing, I intend to base myself in Leighton Buzzard, just to the north of London. Massive thanks are owed to @Proghound for allowing me to work and sleep at his house. The date of my arrival in Leighton Buzzard depends entirely on how much demand there is for my time and services, but it won't be before Monday 24th August.

I shall do my utmost to fulfil as many requests as possible. However, please be aware that there are some limitations to the range of services that I can provide when away from home and doing jobs at relatively short notice... Some upgrades require a lot of advance planning and purchasing of parts. Some upgrades require parts that I won't have the space to transport. Some parts (such as those needed for Colour DIS) are currently out of stock. I also cannot complete all upgrades at weekends, so I'd be grateful if Saturdays and Sundays were left available to those with absolutely no alternative. The final limitations are time and the fact that there's only one of me (for which my girlfriend is eternally relieved!).

At the bottom of this message, I have tagged many club members who have made contact with me in recent months who may appreciate my greater proximity. However, this is not an exhaustive or exclusive list; my services are open to all who are able to meet me.

For those who are unfamiliar with my services, an overview can be seen here:
Kind regards,

Tom

Hello Tom,

is there any chance that you check my A2 1.6FSI air leak problem? I am 50 miles from Leighton Buzzard.
I do not say repair as there might be no time and the parts to order yet if your inspection narrows down a list of possible causes that would be great!
The air leak appears every 2-3 weeks without any apparent reasons, it had started in autumn somewhere. Then it reappeared every 2 months and now the periods have shortened to 2-3 weeks.
2 smoke tests at 2 different places had been done with no smoke visible.
Very rarely there is a scent or whiff of petrol inside the car, yet since March there had been 2 occasions that I had to stop and to go outside to wait until the fumes go away. I do not know if there is any connection between the air leak and the petrol smell.

The scan is made on that VCDC:
**********************************************************************************************************************
2 Faults Found:

17912 - Intake Air System

P1504 - 35-10 - Leak Detected - Intermittent

17573 - Long Term Fuel Trim Additive Air; Bank 1; Range 1

P1165 - 35-00 - System too Rich

Readiness: 0000 0001
****************************************************************************************************************************

If you cannot do this may be you can advise somebody in London or in the vicinity who can sort this problem.

Many thanks indeed,

Andrei

Hello Tom,

Hi Andrei,

Unfortunately, this kind of work is outside the range of services that I offer. My expertise are primarily focused on the A2's electrics and electronics. Although I have some mechanical skills, my experience of fixing the FSI's problems is limited. Furthermore, I'd be reluctant to do any work that risks damage to a fellow club member's driveway. You can get an overview of the kinds of services that I offer in this thread...

If you cannot do this may be you can advise somebody in London or in the vicinity who can sort this problem.
I have no first-hand experience of any professional garages in the entirety of the south of England. My recommendation would be that you take the car to WOM Automotive in Staffordshire. They have immense experience of working on the mechanicals of A2s and work to the same perfectionist standards.

My apologies for a rather disappointing reply.

Kind regards,

Tom

Right then folks, we have a provisional schedule. I've tried to take everyone's preferences into account.

Tues 25th
AM: @ashley7715
Noon: @QuatroA2
PM: @drewroberts
Weds 26th
@Ami, @Providence
Thurs 27th
AM: @Hedge
PM: @2work
Fri 28th
@Mihai
Sat 29th
@Proghound
Sun 30th
AM: @Butlers1594
PM: @jaffa_jim
Mon 31st
@slumdog
Tues 1st
AM: @Mightyleader
PM: @TYP 8Z
Weds 2nd
AM: @Birchall (Own Car)
PM:
Thurs 3rd
AM: @simon martyn
PM:
Fri 4th
AM:
PM: @davenportmb

The gaps:
@Proghound, @Birchall (Wife's Car), Last-minute jobs

I appreciate that 'AM' and 'PM' are a touch vague and that people will want to know specific times. That'll be the next stage of organisation, once I know that everyone is happy with the broad schedule above.
If a day is not divided into 'AM' and 'PM', it means the job has been assigned an entire day.

Could I please ask that everyone replies in this thread rather than in a private message to me. It's so much easier to make adjustments to the schedule when all the information is in the same place. Thank you! :)

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Tom

Morning Tom,

Thursday 27 PM works for me. I’ll be leaving here after the boys have been dropped off at school so should arrive around 1100. I will have the boys booked into after school club as I doubt I’ll get back by 1515 to pick them up.

See you next week (do you want me to bring the full Bose kit or is storage an issue for you).

Kind regards,

Tom
