New 6 speed gearbox method - passat '11 onwards MYP gearbox

Team,

I've updated post 194 - I'd be interested to hear from those who have a six speed conversion as to whether they have to rev their engines hard in 1st when going up the gears, as the calculated RPM / road speeds in 1st would appear to suggest it.
Hi
I haven’t found that to be the case at all.

For me this is the case quick start in 1st is harder than my original 90 box, thought it was my turbo

I got my turbo reconditioned at the same time as new box so that’s probably why I didn’t notice. The reconditioned turbo and a new map restored low end torque that I’d gotten used to not having.

I also had a reconditioned and uprated turbo at the same time

Hi
Just for clarity and in case other readers get the impression that the MYP/PTU on a 75 (AMF or BHC engine) requires revving hard in 1st:

For what gearbox and with what engine are you asking? Im guessing you mean PTW with 90 (ATL)?
I can confirm that MYP and PTU gearboxes on both a standard and remapped 75 (AMF) don't require hard revving in 1st at all. I haven't experience of the longer geared PTW on the 90 (ATL) though.

Yes exactly this - Merlin is getting a PTW, so as per the calcs in post 194, it looks like I will have to rev well past 2600 RPM to change up from 1st to 2nd just to have the revs land at 1400 in 2nd; which it will probably pull OK in that gear if I'm not trying to accelerate hard - This is what's prompting the question.

But Revving to 2600 in first is normal even on the std gearbox. 1st is so low geared it’s near impossible to change up to 2nd without hitting mid 2000 revs
Even in 2nd gear it’s so low that whilst the engine is not in the the best torque position at 1400 rpm it will quickly get to the torque curve
My jdd box on and remapped amf engine is like this
I take it to 2500 on first then 2nd is is around 1400 rpm and it pulls that without issues 3rd is also the same, but if faster progress is desired then 2800 rpm in 2nd results in a change to third and being in the torque band and it pulls swiftly

It’s the higher gears where you need to watch for changing too soon and dropping out of the torque band as the engine needs to accelerate the speed of car more to get into the torque band. Eg 1st to 2nd to gain 300rpm in 2nd gear results in a small increase in car speed
But 4th to 5th that same increase of 300 rpm results in a much greater road speed increase hence the engine will struggle to get back into the torque band

Hope this is clear (it is in my head but difficult to put it into words)

Cheers. Paul

@dj_efk you'll be allright with a 90 ATL. An ATL s'got so much oomph in the lower region of the rpm scale that it will pull the whatever 6 speed box in 1st gear for sure.

I even wouldn't be surprised if you would get it rollin starting in second gear without too much hassle, although not recommended to do so very often......

Done about 400 miles since having the 6 speed box installed. It also had a custom remap & a new clutch whilst at Stealth.

I must say I love it. I had a tall 5th box before; this is miles better. You drive it in a slightly different way - especially on the motorway - but, overall, it's brilliant. You work the engine a lot less, I find. I'm not really seeing revs rise much above 2.4k, from memory. The fuel economy is improved but that could be down to the remap alone (the turbo isn't boosting as high now). It's quieter on the motorway since it's using less revs, obviously.

The single biggest improvement, however, is the quality of the box. It's so much more direct, shorter & positive than the original box. Both that & the MYP have done similar mileages (80k). It's a big improvement. Also improved is how quickly the old girl starts up now with the replacement starter motor.

All in all, hugely impressed. It's the best mod I've made to the car.

Cheers,

Morning all,

This is something I am very interested in having done in time. I have a 2002 (52) 1.4 TDI AMF.

After reading all the posts regarding the MYP gearbox can someone confirm which starter motor I need to obtain or if indeed the standard starter motor works. I’d no doubt ask @chumsofmanutd to do this work for me as this is well beyond my capabilities.

If anyone thinks this can be done on a driveway in a few hours I’d happily travel to you for you to complete it once I have the parts required. Of course paying for your time.

I’m constantly looking for a decent priced MYP gearbox on websites and when I get near a beakers yard. It would be good to obtain all the parts before I have this done.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom,
Looks like we are very much in the same situation.. I have a 1.4TDI 2002 AMF and want a MYP gearbox from a Passat Bluemotion 2011 to 2014.
To my understanding the starter engine issue seems well documented, though a simple job to change the starter if it shows to not fit well.

But what about the speedo? How shall this be sorted on 2002 AMF ? (I have a MYP on hand and will buy as soon as this is clear)

After reading @timmus post#40 I get the impression that if we have ABS unit MK20 in our 2002 AMF, we will not get speedo readings, while if we have MK60 ABS unit, the speedo readings will work. Is that correct?
Thanks

Hello there,

After chatting to Rob at WOM he gave me an idea of where the speed cable is located on the gearbox.

Here is what he sent me:

I then started to feel around (from the top of the car) in that area to find a cable exiting from the picture above.

It’s tight to get to but all I could feel in that area just a knurled bolt/cap, no cable coming from it. Marcus also had a feel around when I dropped off the MYP gearbox to WOM. His findings were the same so guess my 2002 (52) AMF does not have the speed sensor cable fitted.

Regarding the starter motor, there is 2 options I think.

Opt 1, get the starter motor from the vehicle that the MYP gearbox came from. Others have done this and report perfect results.

Opt 2. Have some of the Bell Housing machine off to allow perfect alignment for the factory A2 starter motor.

I went for option 2 and saw the elegant Jig that the gearbox sits in for the machining process. Such attention to detail is observed by the boys at WOM.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Tom

Brilliant Tom ?

Very valuable information for me and exactly what I needed to order the MYP gearbox.
Shipping will take a long week. I will do the fit together with a engine swap and some upgrades so you will be on the road well before me ;)

Good luck with your MYP swap and again, many thanks for your support?

Cheers

Just to highlight to subscribers / readers of this thread regarding gearbox oil to use in the six speeds:

Redline MT-LV is the one to go for if you don’t mind paying a little extra over the standard VAG oil, in exchange for a much better quality gear change (and the six speed already has a nicer change than the diesel 5 speed, apparently), plus a minor fuel efficiency benefit.

It was Opie Oils who put me onto this stuff for this application and I’m now running it in both my VAG diesel six speed vehicles!

EDIT: I've been asked how much oil is needed - 2.3 litres - so 3 bottles.

Evening David,

I’ve just sent a message to Rob at WOM to see if he can get some in time for my MYP before it’s fitted next week.

Thank you for you research and advice.

Kind regards,

Tom

With your instructions it was easy to find the blind for the speed sensor/cable
On the pictures below one can see how the blind was looking on my 2002 AMF and wifes 2005 BHC.
With the skid plate off, it was easy to have a good look at the blind from below. Through the engine room it was limited access I would say....

Since my 2002 AMF do not have speed wire nor a speed sensor from the diff.
Can I then take that my instrument get speed signal from the ABS unit ?

Thanks

Evening,

My knowledge is very limited in this area but I think I’m correct in saying there are only 2 ways that the A2 gets the speed signal. It’s either the cable from the gearbox or the ABS sensor.

Looks like you’re ready to have a 6 Speed Conversion adventure.

Kind regards,

Tom

Another check is the model number of the abs unit. The 20 as the gearbox speedo sensor the 60 uses the abs for the speedo

Hi again Paul,
Then I must have MK60 in my 2002 AMF and it should be plain forward.
Many thanks for the confirmation. This align with what @timmus wrote in post #40 too.

I have run out of depronman supplies and will have to send you a message to fill up again ;)

cheers
