French cleat storage system

Had some great fun making up all these different boxes et cetera for a French cleat storage system I’ve made up three boards on the walls one for the lathe section of the workshop one for the mechanical side and one for the woodwork side just finish the woodwork side one first..made using 18mm birch ply finished with a flooring wax/oil ..The possibilities are endless I highly recommend it ..I had a load of maple strips you just run a 45° angle on the wall strips ..and glue the reverse onto your box;s and they sit there nicely move them where you want that’s the beauty of a system.. I bought a Makita air pin gun I used stainless pins made it so much easier assembling the boxes glue and pin ..

Workshop porn ? That looks fantastic Paul, ingenious yet so simple, as all the best things are. I would love to have the woodworking skills to do something like that, not to mention having all the tools to put in the various modules :D

Thanks folks it’s an enjoyable process having a couple of days off .,then I will start on the small one over the lathe ..a Japanese guy came up with this clever draw system in the small pic below .so this is part of my next project for the French cleat wall you slide out and it tilts down so you can see what’s in ? magic idea ?

Morning Paul,

This all looks amazing. So organised and a million miles away from what I have to put up with right now.

Do keep adding pictures of your progress as this is the sort of thing to give me inspiration for when I build the new storage area and the current garage is converted into an annex.

Total garage envy!

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks tom all the ideas someone else has done before YouTube has been a valuable source for this project an 8ft x4ft sheet Of nicely finished birch ply 18mm is only about £70 all the boxes you can see on that wall came from one sheet and I’ve got enough for another two or three leftover..?

Update on new bench construction ..getting there the two stainless catch trays now installed under the top as the 10mm stainless top has 150 plus 16mm holes laser cut .(hoping for end of week then I can fit ) .tooling ,clamping ,stop holes and also allows swarft dust etc to be swept into trays below and not into whatever I’ve got stored underneath ( they slide in and out ..I picked an old Height adjustable drum stool up and utilised it for a bench seat I’ve welded brackets on the opposite corner so I can lift it off and put it on that..fold down shelf on the end so I can put the bench grinder on when needed ..also wired up 16amp 2,5 cable to be able to wheel bench outside so having its own power supply at each end of bench ..other end of bench will have its own french cleat board for clamps magnets square etc ..used pigeon blue enamel machine paint ..I wanted an all round bench for wood work and metalwork So stainless was my preferred material top and if I’m glueing up wood I’ll lay out brown paper over the top ...I’ve got my big metalworking quick release give to go on one corner and I have a Moxon style woodwork vice I can clamp on and off the worksurface when necessary..I will weld on it but it will only be tig ..
Tool wall work in progress ..The beauty of the French cleat system you can lift each item off each piece and place it in a different spot ..

I will add on other items I’m making as and when at the moment a hanging bracket for all my air tools and another piece to hold various lengths Tie wraps..

Bench top finished hardly any shimIng dead flat ..it’s certainly heavy 104 kilo..just ordered 100 1/2” drum sanding piece as laser cutting leaves a line at one point in those holes ..then it’s onto making all the tooling including F clamps ..stops ..support blocks ..etc all with 16mm studs as sample picture shows the ideas ..I have some of my own to add.

Made a good start on clamps and stops .. I’ve picked up half a dozen 200mm x100mm F clamps £8 each cut the ends off welded on 16 mil stainless pins and collars ended up a real cheap set..turned some brass stops ..and drew out some stainless pieces I have a Great ex University young lad who puts my sketches into a DXF file so I can get them laser cut picked them up yesterday and spent the day fettling and dressing out ...really pleased with results so far .
On the table are a couple of projects a tie wrap storage tubes ..pencil sharpener and pencil and air tool rack .. I made one for myself and I’ve made a couple more for a couple of mates...
