Cluster swap tooling

Hi all new to the posting on forums but here goes . Im looking for abit of advise on a cluster swap as my current one has a bad centre screen which is due to solder pad being missing on one pin for the screen ribbon .
I have full legit vag coms which im happy with but im finding it near impossible to find any way of pulling the skc from the dash.
Vag tacho does not cover the w1 kombiinstr vdo d13 cluster . Ive found some kit called a obdstar x300m and the odomaster . Does anyone have a decent tool for the job they can aim me towards ?
I will need the tools to also recalibrate the odometer as other clocks will be much higher .
Any help would be much appreciated. Kraig

Evening Kraig,

I can help you out with SKC retrieval and only over in Coalville.

Often pop over to Loughborough so this should be a quick and easy thing to sort for you.

Send me a PM so we can swap details. I’m available on my driveway all evenings.

Kind regards,

Tom

Sorry for the slow response I've been struggling to find a noise on the Audi so I think this week I will be pulling the gearbox and replacing it with the Jdd box. Will get back to you once I'm back on the road with the a2 .
I still have not worked out how private messages work on here.
Cheers kraig

A bit odd but messages on this forum are called conversations.

To start a private message:-

Either

Click/touch the envelope icon in main menu bar and click 'Start a new conversation' .....

Or

If the avatar of the intended recipient happens to be on the screen click/touch that, then click 'Start a conversation'.

That would be sweet. . I've ordered a jdd gearbox which should be turning up between now and Friday so stuck waiting on that now. Fingers crossed that sorts the weird heavy metal knock then onto ordering the used clocks so no rush. Cheers kraig

Have you checked the state of the pendulum mount for rubber deterioration or even missing a chunk? Also check the other 2 engine mounts.

Thats where i started , i did the dog bine one and the gearbox side out with vw alternative . Ive had it up and down looking for the noise but nothing has play , i changed the inner cv joints both sides, seem to have alot of backlash in the diff . I can get a knock from that when its up on the air.
Oh for any one doing the inner cv joints its fully doable with the wheels on and without upsetting any tracking . No sure if there is a right up so may do one when i pull the box this week . Great car to work on . Just has quirks
The sound seems to sound the weight of a lose starter motor but in the middle of the firewall and very difficult to make happen if i find this one i will let you all know

Hi Kraig,

Have you seen this thread, specifically Post 10..?

The issue that’s described in the linked thread is different to the issue with your cluster, but that’s no problem to me. If you’re still busy with the gearbox work and can remove the cluster and post it to me, it’s likely that I’ll be able to repair it for less than the cost of a replacement cluster, and it saves faffing about with immobiliser issues.

Cheers,

Tom (Timmus)

Hi Tom i may end up needing that last night i ordered another set of clocks which i should be able to recode but still unsure on how much of the display will work so may end up sending that set to you . Gearbox just came this morning waiting on clutch bits now as i might as well do it all while its off, will need the working display as i will want to see the mpg difference on the jdd gearbox . So will let you know once i plug the new clocks in , cheers kraigb

Hi Kraig,

If you’ve already got a set of replacement clocks, you can send both old and new clocks to me. The new set can then be returned to you, and will be a plug-n-play installation.

Happy to help in whatever way suits you best. I work with A2 clusters regularly, so know them like the back of my hand.

One way or another, please don’t bin the broken cluster. I’ll almost certainly be able to repair it, and we’ll be grateful for all possible spare parts in 20 years’ time! ?

Cheers,

Tom

Yes your right it's getting hard work already for things like drive shafts . I've got a box for all the spares . Even got three spare six spoke alloys as the car didn't come with any spare. If the new clock is I great shape I can always post the only one over to you to help someone else out as the three plug version seems to be hard work to find ,
Will keep you informed as that should be here by Wednesday.
Cheers Kraig
