Climate control refurb

Good Afternoon,

All academic now the eBay listing has ended unless you bought it. Mine is still available in the right circumstances.

@audifan can you expand further why you think the the fan is higher, thanks, I am not disagreeing but looking at my linked photos I see no discernable difference with the fan vent and the A2 climate unit.

OK a correction. There are 2 versions of the A4 climate for this era ( excluding heated seat versions ). The first version as pictured at the start of this thread is not suitable as its fascia is below the fan intake. The other version is positioned in the same place although there may still be issues with the fascia being the wrong shape or too small in areas, although it is quite probable the A2 fascia can be fitted to this A4 unit.

It really depends on exactly what you want this A4 unit to do. If the buttons only are to be used on an A2 unit then apart from being more black there is no issue. If you are buying it for the electronics then a fascia swap should work. However if you are buying it to have the heated seat switches and do not already have a panel with the switches then that is where I think you will have problems getting the A4 fascia to work in the A2. Also could not say if more or less of a problem in a single or DD dash.

All 3 A4 climate panels I had were the type with the smaller fascia that does not cover the fan, wrongly assumed all were like that.

Thanks.

Bought the A4 climate for the fascia with its heated seat switches, the plan was to reduce the A4 button fascia to A2 size. If the A4 climate unit will work in an A2 environment is another question, if it does not then swap this A4 fascia with the facia of an A2 climate.

If anyone cares here is the difference between these two A4 climate panels. The first one in the post is from a single DIN dash and has the fan intake as part of the dash trim, the second is from a double DIN dash and like the A2 has integral fan intake.

I'm planning to upgrade an A2 to fit a modern double din stereo following these instructions (I don't have an A2 yet, but the vast majority of the A2s here have single din dash). In the long run I will try to retrofit seat heating if the car doesn't have heated seats. So, modifying the dash to fit the double din unit, I will need to have at least a climate control fascia with heated seat switches that could be modified to fit the lowest slot in the dash centre panel.

The question I liked to ask is that if I liked to buy a climate control unit from which I could borrow the fascia (and possibly move the seat heating switches) to the A2 unit, which climate control units would be the most preferred to be modified? I read the discussion above so I assume neither of the A4 units from the same era are perfect for the job. Would the auto climate unit from years 2001-2003 A3 be more suitable? I think the part number of the A3 unit is 8L0820043J. The fascia looks the same but higher than in A2 so with cutting and sanding I could modify the fascia to match the A2 double din climate control unit shape? Does anyone here have knowledge if this modification could work in practice?
