Fitting a refurbished wiper…

Hi,
Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but…..

I was fitting a new refurbished wiper today…

1. The old wiper has been on probably 20+ years and it is likely seized on the spline (beyond the thread) so therefore, spray lots of anti seize spray, it will not budge happily without😳

2. When fitting the refurbished wiper… do not over tighten (like I did) as you will likely break the wiper area that allows you to fit/tighten the nut.
3. Image is attached😢😢😢😢😢😢😳

Ouch! :(

A good torque wrench is always a sound investment.

Just two days ago I wanted to replace the wiper arm. Tried taking it off, won't budge. I think mine was also there for 20 years. Bought a wiper arm puller - didn't help! Sprayed penetrating oil + puller: no luck!
Next I am going to try the "nut, spanner and hammer" method, that would hopefully get it off.

Depronman is able to repair the damaged wiper arm (thanks Paul). So I guess I am going to purchase one of those small brass wire brushes and fully clean the splines, then I shall put some copper grease on the splines so that the wiper fixture can slide on and off properly and of course, finger tight will do for me (will check it periodically of course to make sure it has not become loose).

Put the puller in tighten it up, VERY tight. Then hit the screw quite hard. There will be a bang and the arm comes off. Never failed with me

I took off the wiper arms tonight, after watching a less than a minute long german how-to video on yt.
I wedged a 19 mm wrench under the wiper arm (bolted end, obviously), unscrewed the nut (no more than 2 turns), then with a vice grip I clamped the top of the nut and the underside of the 19mm wrench. It took a few atempts till I found the right adjustment and then it popped and felt like I broke something, but I only broke loose the arm from the tapered axle.
Now comes the hard part: fixing the loose joints.

Give this a search: Scheibenwischer abziehen ohne Abzieher Audi A2

If using that approach make sure the screen is well protected with thick foam under the arm to prevent screen damage. Personally never needed to use the puller on the wiper arms. While the arm is off ideal time to check or replace the spindle grommet to keep the water out of the wiper mechanism.

Having taken the wipers arms of hundreds of A2’s I’ve never had an issue removing one, no special tools needed.

Once the nuts have been removed Lift the arm to the upright position and rock the arm at the mounting point in an up and down movement. Has never failed me yet.

At most you may need to hit the mounting point with a rubber mallet if you get a particularly difficult one, just to break the seal.

Paul I was not implying that your supplied arm was faulty just that if the previous user had forced it off there was a possibility of the arm being cracked.

you can send me the wiper arm to have it professionally re bushed and new stainless steel pins fitted, followed by a complete rebdown and repaint in satin 2K black. The cost is £35 for a hook are or £45 for an aero arm which includes a 3D printed cover. I don't have any left hand drive wiper arm so cannot offer the usual exchange service, but more than happy to refurbish your own and retur it to you in France. Shipping cost will need to be determined.
I've done a few for members in Sweden and Denmark over the last few years

Cheers,
Paul

no problem Graham, I was simply point out that they are all checked prior to leaving me as I had an issue with a member some 5 years ago who clearly over torqued the arm and cracked the cast alloy part, then tried it on with me that I supplied a cracked arm. He eventually came clean when I asked how tight he torqued it too, the answer was basically stripped and half a turn back

Cheers,
Paul

And that is exactly what has happened to me, over tightening the darn nut😳 I should not be so ham fisted🤭

Today I resorted to this and it worked. I had to bang multiple times, on both mount points. The puller got destroyed in the process, so there is no way this would have come off with a rubber mallet and wiggling. It was properly fused together. :)

Possibly although that does look a bit far gone IMO., @depronman does an excellent refurbishment/exchange on wiper arms, I seem to recall a recent post when he mentioned he had some on the shelf. Best to pm him

You are correct in that I don’t have any stock of LH wiper arms
I’ve refurbished a few for members in Sweden and Norway and a couple from Germany but they have sent me their own for refurbishing

I can do the same here but it’s touch and go in that picture as it does look well worn in the housing. I do ream the holes out and can go up a few sizes and make the pin to suit but there is a limit
A weld repair to fill the hole then re drill it is also possible but it’s a lot more work

Cheers. Paul

PS I still have stock of both aero and hook arms but all RH drives

It’s doable but may need a weld repair will will increase the cost some what over over the normal £35 I charge
No idea of postage to where you are
