01760 fault code

Project second chance threw up the eml today, plugged in VCDS and it would not connect to the engine ecu.
Went into the instrument cluster section and received the code 01760 - No Communication with Engine Control Module (ECM)

I have read the ECM codes in the past so was quite surprised when I couldn’t get into it today, would this be down to the lead or something else?

Did it connect to the car? Or just not connect to the ECM?

Yes, it connected to the car and cleared an intermittent abs sensor fault code from the abs ecu, it would connect with other control modules as well but just not the ECM

I’m using VCDS lite with an old KKL lead

What other work has been done recently? What was the ABS fault? Remember the ABS talks to the ECU and other systems including the steering angle sensor, throttle position, lateral accelerometer and other sensors. Any other dash warning lights RECENTLY? Any wiring connection on any of the systems that talk can raise various warnings including the EML. Bad earths, low power even blown fuses all play their part. The clue may be with the ABS sensor, its wiring or immediate area.

Can you print off the VCDS result and post it?

The abs fault has reappeared so I’m guessing it’s the sensor itself, however the plan is to swap the lh and rh one this weekend and see if the issue moves to the opposite side as I believed the sensors are not handed.

I’ve tried changing the baud rate and still no comms with the ECM, the earths are good and the voltage at battery and alternator are 14.4v, recently the only work being done in the car are washing and polishing, the last bit of mechanical work was the cambelt change about 50 miles ago

I would double check if the front sensors are handed. Not saying they are just can not remember if they are. Carefully check the ABS loom as it runs down the front strut. I have seen them damaged by incorrect routing or wheel rubbing. Brake lights and switch all working correctly? Not had the steering wheel off recently? Wheel bearings good? Buckled wheel? All wheels and tyres the same size?

If nothing wrong from above list, remove the battery leads ( both of them ) then touch both battery LEADS together to discharge all power from the car. Reconnect both battery leads and try VCDS again.

The loom is good, I did a visual today, steering wheel hasn’t been off, I’ve got one wheel bearing that’s howling a bit O/S I believe, still got
All the wheels are good and the same type/size.

Will try the battery leads over the weekend and do vcds again, I’m tempted to buy a good quality lead rather than the ropey kkl lead I currently have

Have you checked the connection to the ECU? Make sure the retainer is pushed fully home.

They are handed -
6Q0 927 803 B left, 6Q0 927 804 B right.

That being said, having got a pair of these and the knuckles recently for the brake build, I believe it is likely that they could be swapped in terms of fitting into the knuckle casting hole, but perhaps the retaining screw hole, and the angle of the connector in the casing are the opposite way round so maybe stretching the loom a bit far. I don't have them to hand to confirm right now.

Did you find the fault?
