Hi everyone, the Cam belt has snapped. 1.4 petrol,130k, 2001, can I fix it or should it just go to heaven, looked on ebay and Can pick up an engine for £300 not sure how much to replace it. Garage just told me to scrap it, but I love the car. any help people

Depends on the history and spec I guess. I can recommend an A2 specialist up my way (Staines area), he does have a trailer.

Your garage may be assuming you won’t want to spend more than what the car is worth - or they may not want the work.

If the latter, you need to take it to another garage.

Engines are not that expensive, if you like the car then only you can decide whether it’s worth fixing it.

everything on the car works, went straight through the MOT. Mech at the time said it was a great car. no idea what spec, but it has AC, I am in Portsmouth so prob a bit far for me

I’ve done a few of these and never had anything worse than bent valves. A set of valves and new stem seals. Head gasket and stretch bolt and it back together
Plus a water pump and cam belts/ tensioners etc
The parts will be around £300 maybe a little less but if you buy a second hand engine you would still need the cam belts water pump tensioners and then have the cost of an engine swap
So I think fixing your own engine would be as cheap as a replacement engine and you have an engine that you know the history off

Paul, didn't you split the engine with the snapped belt that came out of my old breaker and find that the bores and piston crowns were badly scored as well as all the valves bent? Or does it tend to come out differently on BBY engines like that one, compared to the older AUA like the OP has?

Whichever way forward if not scrapping, as well as the belt linking one of the camshafts to the crank, make sure to replace the smaller belt that links the two cams together. This is what had failed on my old breaker's engine.

Worth buying it for that money as it gives you options
Remove the head from the original engine
Check bores for damage but I suspect you will just have bent valves
Then you have an option of either changing the complete engine or swapping the cylinder head from the other engine or replacing the valves and stem seals

If you swap out the engine fit a new water pump and belts tensioners etc before fitting the engine.

How many miles as your original engine done ? Is the clutch ok / ever been changed
All of these factors come into play in the decision to repair the original engine or swap in the £100 engine
I assume it’s an AUA engine that you have been offered for £100
