1.4 or 1.6

I can't say I've ever driven another 1.4i but mine in particular has a good throttle, but is slightly underpowered in some cases. However, she sounds great with a stainless exhaust, she sounds like she's more powerful than she is without a doubt.

Which exhaust did you get? I need one for my 1.6 AVY

I actually ordered a standard steel one of eurocarparts a couple of years ago, and they sent stainless by accident, it needed modifying but it did fit in the end.

I suspect you'd be getting better performance with a 'straight through' design.

No, since you keep the two cats. Check out the thread I linked to earlier.

Then it’s not a straight through pipe, unless you are gutting the Cat housing in which case it may fail in emissions if running rich

There is another way of looking at the 1.4 / 1.6 question.
If money is no consideration and you are prepared to (possibly) spend much more on the car than it is actually worth - buy a 1.6 FSI. Most people report that a sorted 1.6 FSI is a very nice drive - but only a minority are prepared to invest the time and money to achieve this.

I have a 1.6 FSI, which has a full Audi service history, clear VCDS scan, under 50,000 mls, 2 owners from new (first for 13 years) and a price to match. Goes well (on Shell), so, my advice is don't rush into it, better buy right and enjoy (hopefully), than buy cheap and spend expensive. FSI, feel the lurve! Mac.

There is a very simple answer to this one - have both! ?
That's what I did. My 1.6 for long journeys and the smile on my face when its 'skirts up girlie', joining a dual carriageway.
The 1.4 for the short hops to work and the shops (FSI's hate short hops)

I just love the 1.4tdi, the heavier it is laden the better it pulls and if I put my foot down in 5th it just pulls uphill without a downshift. Will have to see though what it is like after I changed the turbo as not had a chance to test it yet. Oh and about 500miles on a tank with a heavy foot!
