Chat 1.4 petrol buying advice

Hi all, sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question but I’m in the market for a 1.4 petrol and viewed one today. Bodywork wasn’t in great shape but that’s reflected in the price. Mechanics wise it drove well - no suspension, brake or steering noise. The one thing I did pick up was a rasping noise from the engine when accelerating in 1st and 2nd. Appreciate that isn’t much to go on but would be interested to hear whether that is a normal engine characteristic on the 1.4 petrol.

Thanks very much in advance!

In short, no. It’s quite likely that one of the air intake pipes has become disconnected and so it’s sucking air from the atmosphere post filter. That will give a raspy throaty noise.

Could also be a blow on the exhaust.

Without a sound clip it’s hard to tell, but it’s something for you to go from.

Thanks A2Steve, that’s very helpful. I think I will heed the sensible advice in one of the buying guides and test drive a couple more 1.4s for comparison.

Hi Kleynie - I’m not too far from you actually as I’m in Rickmansworth. Have admired your car but unfortunately it’s outside of my budget

That's fine, but I meant that you can drive her for comparison, she drives perfectly, so you can use her to see what they should be like. So if you want to, you're welcome to.

That’s very kind of you and that would be great in order to get a benchmark. I will PM you.
