1.4 Petrol 'coolant regulator housing' -are these available?

This is the moulded black plastic thingy that has the thermostat and the engine temp sensor fitted to it, its located the opposite end to the timing belt. My engine is the one with HT leads and a centralised coil pack. Several hoses attach to it. Are these available new? As a pattern part or genuine VAG?

Hi Chris

I think the part number is 032121111AM and a quick search shows Topran coming up a lot. No idea what the quality is like

Best wishes

J

Hi Chris,
I bought the Topran version from Autodoc, the housing is universal to both types of thermostat, it's only the thermostat cover that has to match the one applicable to your vehicle ... I swapped the thermostat and matching cover that came with the Topran for genuine Audi parts and have had no issues to date whatsoever.
With the housing removed it is straight forward to replace the 'death pipe' ... it's a push fit into the back of the water pump housing and a 'U' clip holds it in place at the thermostat end.
Don't forget to buy new thermostat housing bolts as you are likely to damage the originals on removal.

This is relatively reassuring to hear. So the 1.4 death pipe is different to the FSi?
So, when you unbolt the housing after disconnecting all the hoses, the death pipe comes away with the housing, then you can separate it once off the car? Sorry if I am being a bit thick here. I'm a diesel boy!

Hi Chris, the so called death pipe is the same part on the FSI and the 1.4.
Yes the death pipe should pull out of the water pump end and stay attached to the thermostat housing and the process is reversed when installing ... from memory I think there's a cable attached to it along its length that also needs detaching ... I also replaced the death pipe for peace of mind.
Only three small bolts hold the thermostat housing in place with the lower one hidden from view.

I am breaking an AUA ( as you say with HT leads ) at the moment with all HT leads, Ignition controller, thermostat housing etc etc still available if you require any parts,
Cheers

Hi, I did mine last week 1.4 Petrol AUA and bought the torpan, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175097922429 seems ok.

TBH its an utter PITA of a job, you need to remove one of the gear selector cables and you really need some decent hose clamp pliers to get the clamps off. You need to refit the rear (death) pipe to the housing and then slide the pipe down the back and refit (there are various posts about this). Its not fun TBH so bank on some good time to do it. I did this when I first bought the car and the seal of the replacement pipe was terible and leaked (flashing) so Iv now done this four times :-(

Hi Carbore ... I managed without detaching the gear cables by removing the nut and marking the position of the counterweight on the selector spline ... white paint and a pen ... slip the counterweight and cables off and out of the way.
All the best ... Tom

Hi Chris ... another tip for when you're removing the coolant fluid.
Detach the narrow hose that returns fluid to the reservoir and feed it into a plastic bottle ... let the engine tick over and it pumps into the bottle and will save you a bit of mess ... I removed a couple of litres and this took the fluid level below the thermostat housing ... still a bit of spillage but not as bad 🧐
Maybe should add ... do this when the engine is cold!

You know what? I thought exactly the same! I have managed to ‘repair’ the offending article and no leaks! However I have ordered a brand new one and will try replacing it when the weather improves somewhat.
