1.4 SE Project AZ by Miniswift

Please do not use the trapped air removal on a petrol. That space is needed for fuel expansion. OK to use in the diesels but not petrols.

Earth points all over the car. Check your battery terminals are tight and the box to the left of the positive terminal is tight to the positive clamp and the internal connections are tight.

What did you use to check the battery to get a result of half full? What does a meter show the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running?

Also get yourself VCDS, a KKL or Gendan cable and plug into a Windows laptop with a USB port. Far more directly useful information for us to help diagnose faults.

Hi,

I new I was going to drive long distance and never driven A2 for more than 1 hour so I needed to make sure I get this journey without worry.
I have bought KKL and now waiting for reply after registration.
It was Delphi OBD2 reader program and it tells me battery is seeing 13.2v at idle engine speed.
Also I checked with multi meter as well and says 13.2v. At alternator it is 14.2v.
While I was on road, I used this device that connect to battery and tells you what condition your battery is in with charge and so on without engine running. With engine running, it will tell you if your alternator is faulty or not. When I drove down to my destination, I check and it tell me it is full. So my thought is that when I use head lights either day light or full light, it will draw more current than it should due to bad earth again.
I think it may be same for the stereo and cigarettes lighter.

Main issue I have with this car is not known full history of the car. I know it was regularly serviced but DIY job and only did average of 3k miles/year for last 7 years. I will change fuel filter, oil filter and all other items when I get back. I think I need to change cam belt as well. I think they are every so many years or miles driven?

Thank you for taking time to help me.

You can use the KKL cable and VCDS Lite WITHOUT registering it. You will only get detailed fault information for the first fault but the codes for others. Registered will give details of all faults.

Yes performing a full service now is a very good idea along with belts and water pump. Add to that list brake fluid flush and clutch flush.

I would take the car to a garage and have them load test the battery and check the alternator. It could be an ancient battery in the car that is past it and lost its capacity. Looks like the alternator is providing charging but the battery is not storing it.

My friend who helped me change oil told me that it has been cross threaded and three is badly damaged.
Can anyone tell me what thread it is?
Do they have magnet in plug or not?
If I was to repair, I would like to fit with magnet so that any shaving of metals can be kept with sump plug!

Cheers
Atchi

Well, I'm an engineer so should be OK to do most of work. I bought sump repair kit it come with metal inserts not helicoil.
This metal insert has flat surafce so that machining is not neccessary after fitting it.

I will drive my car onto drive on rumps and I willgo under neath to get good access.

What I would like to know is what size thread is OEM M16 I think. I would like to buy sump plug with a magnet fitted.
As I said, this car is going to be a learner car, so i expect gears to be shaved!

I shall wait for my kit to arrive and check and order suitable magnetic sump plug before I start on work.

Cheers

Oh should wiper start to work without actually touching a stalk?
I replaced my old one with OEM Audi stalk....

Strange things like to come on and give my daughters a fright!

Good Evening,

For thing like bolt sizes I recommend bookmark/add to favorites our A2 bible.

Navigate down to the part of interest, looks like item 22/23.

Remember it's not a Mini, the gearbox oil is separate to the engine!
If a magnetic sump plug is to be used to catch teeth from the gears then metal shavings are the least of your worries ;)

Doh! Too ture.
I might change gearbox oil, too from the looks of engine oil, it might be oevr due.

I'm not into A-series engines. I have been fitting Swift Gti engine into Minis.
I have another project which is G10 3 pot engine which again going in to my mini for future car for girls to drive.
With G10 993cc engine, I can have 75bhp and 5 speeds gearbox for £150 instead of £4k for gearbox and £3k for the engine!

Thanks, I jusy hope I have enough room under the car by jist driving onto rump.
My garage has a table lift but my mini is on it and I can't move it for a while!

So, I took my other daughter for a drive and starting have little rattle from the back.
After inspections, I can see that some of or almost all of heat shields are either coming loose or fastener missing.
I can see some of them are fixed by plastic screws and some by metal screws(rusted away). Do I really needed these?
Anyway, I can see my back box's weld tube into it is starting rust and looks like it has stress fracture to it.
If I buy 1.75" tubes and 4"x1.75"x12" back box, I think I can make cat back system as I can TIG/MIG.
My question will be how noisy will it be for my girls!
So material cost will be about £85 and may hangers to be looked into.

Can I make a turbo manifold while I'm at it!? My wife says "NO"! Oh well, I shall stick with Suzuki engine modifications parts then.

Today, I looked into oil sump leaks.
So my mechanic friend told me that I can buy M14 spark plug top hat repair kit.
It will come with M16 outside thread with M14 fine thread. The reason of doing this islast time I changed oil(first time since I bought it), sump plug was not bitting into it. meaning it has been cross threaded and keeping it oil tight might be an issue. Oil was changed 3 weeks ago.....

So, I drove my car onto drive on ramps and looked under neath.....
So much oil has been sprayed onto driver side suspension arm and almost below minimum level for the oil!
These kit come with tap/leamer tool. First of all, I needed to drain oil and oil was very dirty and it was new oil 3 weeks ago and it tells me I will need engine flush to clean inside for better circulations. I have tried to thread using ratchet but it wasn't working and it didn't get any bite.
So I used my cutting disc and made it bit more sharper and it started to cut in, great!
My instruction was to screw in with locktight on.... guess what, it start to go in but somehow managed to cross thread as well.(took me 3 hours to here).
Another 1hour went and managed to take out top hat heli coil thing.
This time I used M16 oil sump repair kit which come with M17 tap.
So, another 1 hour later, this is what I managed to take photo of below.

To my horror, still leaking but less now with hot oil!

would teflon plumbing tape help seal this? Obviously it is a slightly harsher environment than radiator pipes.

The more parent material removed the less sealing area available. After recent events I would be looking to replace the sump.

Would I be able to take off sump by undoing bolts?
I can see it has 2 bolts into gearbox bellhousing. I might have to take out down pipe to get enough clearance.

What do you guys think?

Welcome. You seem to have a number of issues but sounds like you have the skills and equipment to tackle them.
I think I need to change cam belt as well. I think they are every so many years or miles driven?

I recalled I made a post back in 2009 after Audi revised their guidance to five years or 75k but I'm pretty sure it got changed again to five years or 50k. That's what I go on.

I would like to think I have skill and tools but time!
My hobbies are cars and I bought this reasonably cheap so 17 years old car, I expected many things wrong with it.
