1.4 tdi 2002 - Annoying Front End Rattle

Hi, im new to this site and to being an Audi Owner, and would greatly appreicate any help please. I have bought the above car knowing that it needed a new roll bar, which has now been replaced. However, we now have an annoying rttle from underneath the front of the car that is worse as trips go on and stops hen you apply brakes. The garage have said it is the Brake calipers that have loosend and would cost a lot to replace. Therefore live with it. However, it does sound like a train going over a dodgy piece of track (think that is the best way of describing), and although they have said it has passed all safety tests my other half is still concerned with a little'un in the back, and it is very noticeable when going over drains, bumps etc..

Any one else had this?? Seems weird it now is the brakes being suggested after a roll bar has been fitted. P.S. Went to Renault Main dealer as they are close to me. They should be reputable and must admit were very good with any old SEAT in the past. Would i be best to take to Audi?? Many thanks.

Thanks Spike

Thanks Spike, i did email this link to the Garage and they assured me it wasnt this. I do have a mechanic contact at the local Audi dealer, although he has been off from an op. Ill try him, hopefully he is back and can have a look sometime. Regards Paul

just a long shot, what about a broken spring??

I had one on my A2, it's also an 02... but it's big on miles nearly 150,000

Help please - Problem worsened although we dont want to sell!

Hi Folks. Greatly appreciate any inputs again as we are some months down the line but still have the front end probs with our Diesel A2. Since last time i have taken to Audi and they could not find any probs. Greased and adjusted a few bits but that was it. However we have tried to live with the problems as we do love the car and are reluctant to sell. Although after a holiday this week and covering 800 miles the car does frustrate you and seems like you are driving a 'bag of nails'. The 2 problems now are:

1) Constant rattling (sounds like metal plates banging together) fine on decent road above 60mph. Although terrible on say a normal everyday city street travelling at 30.mph. Rougher the road, worse it gets. If this is downhill, it will stop when you apply brakes??

2) Brake clunk. This only happens when you apply brakes at low speed (10 - 20 mph). Its def a clunk and not a rattle, although i wonder if its connected to 1). Kwik Fit brake test came back with nothing. They had 2 testers said it passed their tests.

Like i said, really dont know who to go to now. From previous posts i asked Audi to check springs and they said they were fine. From recent posts, could it be the drop-links? Anyone know of a good Audi contact in the Norwich area?

Any inputs greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Paul

Hi there. I know nothing about mechanics I'm afraid, but I'll give my view in the hope that you dont sell the A2 and get to the root of the problem.:)
I have had a similar experience to your comments above. The first time I was scared the car was going to blow up on me! (call it melodrama and concern for a loved one!)
It turned out to be no more than a stone caught between the brake disc and the guard behind this component. Now, it couldnt be that simple - could it??

This noise disappeared on braking and I have had further examples of debris getting caught in this area making a simlar noise to that which you describe. Now I may be lucky, as on every occasion the matter has corrected itself very quickly- however I am wondering if the garage that takes your money has carried out a full 'wheels off' inspection of the car? If not, I'd look at this as a possibility and have it investigated by someone that knows what they are doing - more importantly - someone who considers your interests over billable hours. Good luck, and I hope you get the car fixed.

I have just had this problem repaired on my A2 they repaired the Anti roll bar and also replaced the bushes on the steering linkage arms to do the whole job it cost £125 and there is no noise or rattle whatsoever. It was driving me mad before it was so noisey. Good luck Jenny
