Hello. I am wondering what the performance differences are between the 1.4 TDi 75PS and the 1.4 TDi 90PS? Apart from the basic data given in the Audi homepage, such as 0-60mph and top speed, little else is given. What about in-gear acceleration, mid-range acceleration and rpm at 70mph. Is this data given in the owner's handbook. Any technical data would be very appreciated in helping me decide which one to buy. Cheers.

I previously had a 75PS and now run a 90PS. The principal performance differences from my experience are:-

1. More low down urge with the 90PS (less turbo lag)
2. More mid-range punch with the 90PS (it feels nippier)
3. A deeper 'growl' as the VV turbo spools up (sounds nicer)

At 70mph the tacho is at about 3000rpm from memory.

Having said all of this - the 75PS had a re-map which made it a wolf in sheeps clothing.

I don't have any technical data on hand, but...

I test drove the 75PS late last year and hated it. Of the cars I was considering it was placed at the very bottom of the list.

However, February came and I still hadn't bought so I headed out to test drive the 90PS and the difference was remarkable. Less than 2 hours later I had placed my deposit on a dolphin grey 90PS TDI.

The interior is quieter, the acceleration is better, the suspension is firmer (but not too firm). I would not be driving an A2 now if it wasn't for the 90PS TDI.

Most of my driving will be on the motorway, do you know if there is much difference in cabin/engine refinement at 70mph?

Hello Will

If you haven't had the opportunity to drive a diesel A2 at motorway speeds you will find it a revelation. I would go so far as to say the A2 is a better motorway cruiser than town car!

As well as virtually no engine noise, there is a welcome absence of wind noise (especially on post 2002 floppy wiper cars) and a well sorted, "planted" ride free of the choppiness felt in all models at low speeds.

Having driven all engine variants, I'd say the diesels stand out for their mid-range urge - great for overtaking. The 90PS engine in particular is a beauty.

All of this and the knowledge that you're driving a car with great fuel economy and individuality.

Enjoy!

Hi Will

I've had 2 75PS since September 2001 and a couple of weeks ago had a test drive in the 90PS. Like the comments above, it was a revelation.

To sum it up, it goes like stink.

In the 75 you get a push in the back at around 2,000rpm when the turbo kicks in. In the 90 it's there immediately. Real life, on the road acceleration felt impressive in any gear. I'd agree it will eat up motorway miles. I've read elsewhere that the 90PS engine is quieter than the 75 but I didn't notice any difference. The 90 does sound as if it has more than 1400cc's, sounds much more like a 1.9.

In the 75 there are occasions when you think twice about an overtake because the red line comes in at critical moments. In the 90 it seemed to achieve a higher speed in any given gear. It's the first time I've seen 120 on an A2 speedo. It won't let you down at the traffic light grand prix either.

The 90 has rear disc brakes compared to the drums of the 75 but I didn't notice much difference in everyday driving. This one had 1500 miles on the clock.

I'd say data on paper is all good and well but you need to drive the 2 in every day road conditions to evaluate which one suits you best. Having driven the 90 has given me food for thought mmmmmm

The 75 is an excellent car, as anyone who has driven one will confirm. The extra 15PS has transformed it. I'm sure it will embarass many people when they are overtaken by this little 1.4 TDI.

Sorry - the rev counter is at 2400 when doing 70mph in 5th - on the 90ps model
