1.4 TDi starting problems

New owner of an A2 2002 1.4TDi SE. Any ideas on the probblem I have? Turn the key to Pos II, all the diagnostics checks come up fine, the glow plug light goes off, turn the key to pos III nothing happens? If I hold the key in pos III eventually (after ~10 secs) the starter motor turns and it starts? If the car is warm the problem goes away? :confused:

Turned out to be a bad connection on the starter motor. Took the plug off cleaned it up, works like a treat! Simple really, but I'm not the best mechanic in the world so any advise is taken! :)

Further developments!

Several days after cleaning the connections the problem came back:confused: So a trip to the local Audi dealer was required :mad:
They diagnosed a faulty ignition barrel switch and said the barrel was also worn. They have ordered the parts and are covering them on the used car warranty! What a result! The service manager (without actually saying it) acknowledged that this was a common problem on pre 2003 cars. Due to poor quality VW sourced parts!!!!!!!
If this happens to you, just wiggle the key and it will start! That was the advice from the dealer, until he the the bits in.

I will update you all when the bits arrive and the fault is fixed! :)
 
Problem sorted for good this time!

New ignition barrel and swtich fitted (under warranty), key reprogrammed, car washed and valleted. Starts perfectly every time.:D

Thank you Mr Audi dealer! (can't believe I just said that!);)

Tip: If it won't start, wiggle the key!! Then get a new barrel ordered before it fails completely!!
 
It took 8 weeks for them to order and manufacture the new barrel (to match the existing ones) and then a week to get in booked in. As Teesside Audi were in the process of moving garages. I also didn't believe that it would fix the problem! But after 4 weeks of use and no issues I guess it's cured, I am also a bit slack at completing threads I've started!! :eek: Sorry!

actually had same issue on mine but manifested it self in a differnt way whihc was that my second hand replacemnt key wouldnt work despite doing the coding . took into audi and they could get either original key or my replacemnt/additional one to work but not both together . They said it was ignition barrel and replaced it too. My a2 is 2004 04 reg - now fixed FOC
