1.4tdi AMF Balance chain change

Hi All I suspect my balance chain components are worn as there are a couple of grooves present on the lower Alloy cover plate on inside

So looking at changing the tensioner and chain
Now I have seen kits with the cogs and also kits without the cogs and just the chain and Tensioner.
From what I read the cogs don't wear or is very minimal so just thinking of changing the chain and Tensioner what are peoples thoughts?

I am also after the lower alloy cover plate if anyone has one? As mine has worn through.

Pics attached showing the Tensioner jacked out .

Also the crank Centre bolt anyone know the torque figure is

I like cycling and if you change the chain and not the cogs after heavy wear, it doesnt work. the teeth will have some wear and the chain and smaller gap between rivets/links so whiles its all off change them all would be my advice. I am in no way an engineer or mechanic though!

The lower sprockets in particular do wear, buy and fit the kit that includes them - the part numbers are in the relevant section.

Having suggested elsewhere that I would need access to your components to form an opinion I have enlarged your picture on a PC and can clearly see wear on the crank sprocket. If you replace it then you also have to replace the chain too, and possibly the remaining sprockets.
It depends how good a job you want to do, if the car is a keeper I'd replace everything, If you just need another year out of it just replace the tensioner and pads and accept you have bought a tittle more time.

A further point from enlarged pictures, your chain looks worn and too long as well. It looks like the tensioner has pushed the chain onto the casing. Worn slipper pads will contribute but mine were worn through and there was no casing contact, Logic suggests your chain is worn and is too long. My advice now would be fit a new set of components.

When it went that far, grinding against housing, I would also suggest changing the sprockets. Also if you start with it, do the timing belt as well at once ;)

So this issue Was noticed during a lower arm change which completely rotted through and failed an oil leak was noticed around the sump when undertray was removed after the Lower arm was changed and a week later i noticed the oil was leaking a lot more as i left the undertray off as was planning to the timing belt and water pump soon and ordered them the same time as the lower arms.
So when I opened the bonnet i noticed the T/Belt tensioner had failed and worn through the T/Belt cover and oil all over the Timing belt! The T/ belt had moved towards the rear of the cam sprocket , When i stripped down the Belt covers and cleaned the area the leak was hard to spot , What had happened is the T/Belt had worn through the Lower Chain Flange cover slightly! And oil was leaking from there . So removed the Flange cover to discover Marks of the chain Catching the Flange cover and Oil tensioner jacked out !
So quite lucky at the moment to find this issue as i would not have known Either the T/Belt issue or Balance chain issue if the lower arm had not failed !

You are lucky to still have an engine, Those castings are not cheap either, you need to find a wrecked engine to salvage one off.

I know would be a major job if the cambeltwent or the chain 😬 Just can't locate those casting anywhere at the moment quite a few 1.9PD ones about only no 1.4 PDs

I currently have put super steel into the groove Like JB weld equivalent on both sides . As thinking its not a lot of oil pressure in that area and hopefully should hold 🤷🏻‍♂️.

It may be worth carefully checking a 1.9PD casting. After all the 1.4 is pretty much a 1.9 with one cylinder chopped off.

Please tell me that you have matching lower arms and NOT one cast and one pressed.

Yeah I think the 1.9PD maybe different as it not sure if it has the oil sensor hole or balance chain But would have to check one to be sure .

😁 I got both cast arms .
