1.4tdi gearbox selector removal

Morning My fellow A2 comrades! Can anyone tell me how to remove and replace the gear selector from the 1.4tdi (75) gearbox please - I'm hoping it can be done without removing gearbox - mine has the typical bearing failure and seal failure of the selector and their gearstick is flopping around like a pogostick . I want to sort this weekend. Manky transmission oil also leaking past seal so looks like I will need to change oil as well....deep joy. Thanks all

There is a cap at the bottom of the box with VW on it which looks like it is at the bottom of the shaft and I'm assuming it allows you to understand disengage the selector shaft. I'm going to go to my local 'old fashioned' scrap yard on sat morning and see if I can find a similar box and experiment - once I understand it I will update my the post with instructions.

It's just dawned on me that I am being a complete knob. I dont need to remove the shaft just the alloy cap that has the bearing and seal in....I will have a go tomorrow - Doh - my brain hurts
 
Brilliant threads - thanks Steaman - I have a new bearing seal and washer on order from Audi Hatfield - will pickup in the morning -will update when done
 
Ive done it ! Bush and bearing changed and gearbox oil - l now have all gears back. I took loads of photos and I will upload them and a description of how i did it over the next few days - a few tricky bits but definately do-able. Brent

Hi.. I was just after some info... I'm having trouble with 2nd gear ,if feels almost spongy going I to gear and when pulling off at speed to go up hill for instance it will not go into 2nd at all... Any help would be great
