[1.6 FSI] - Intake Valve Cleaning DIY

OK, no pictures because this is a horrible and messy job so I am only giving tips because this must have been covered at least 1 billion times online.

1. Get to the valves.
2. Start with the cylinder closer to the cambelt or any other cylinder for that matter as long as you rotate the engine to bring the piston at TDC, preferably on the compression stroke. This means that the valves of that cyllinder are closed and you can proceed.
3. My weapons of choice were:
a) dental examination toolkit- ebay special.
b) mirror + flashlight.
c) rifle barrel cleaning brush kit
d) brake cleaner/etc.
e) compressed air.
f) rags.
g) a long prong, i used an arc welding rod with the paste stripped off.
4. Cover the rear of the engine bay to protect it from the mess.

I started off by soaking the valves with brake cleaner and working with the prongs, etc and the brushes. I then covered the inlet port and hit it with compressed air. After each cycle of spraying/soaking/poking around use the mirror and the flashlight to assess the progress that has been made. I found out that you need at least 3-4 cycles for each cylinder.

They turned out all right given their initial state and tools in my possession. Lots of huge carbon deposit chunks came out in a satisfying manner accompanied by soot.

I am changing the oil afterwards anyway so not too worried about any cleaner having made it through.
