1.6 FSI Problems

Hi,

Posted recently about the Engine Management light on our 2003 1.6 FSI
Sport.

We've only had it a couple of months but I've noticed that it pulls very poorly at low revs and is very easy to stall. I haven't driven another 1.6 so couldn't compare the experience. The EML came on recently so it was up to Agnew's in Belfast for a check up.

They told us that the compression on cylinder 3 was very poor and most likely caused by a valve problem due to carbon build up. This is particularly a problem on low mileage cars (so they say). Ours is a 2003 and has just covered 40k miles. It's hadn't been laid up as far as we're aware.

They suggested that we try a petrol additive for a month to see if that improves things. If not, we're looking at £1k to remove the cylinder head and replace the valve. They reckon it's 50/50 in terms of the additive solving the problem.

Has anyone else experience this? They checked the coil pack and the plug and both are fine.

The type of driving my wife does probably doesn't help. It's mostly stop and start around town.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

No, it's not the coil packs. They were all checked and it's fine. The garage said it's low compression on cylinder 3 most likely caused by the valve not operating properly due to carbon build up.

It gives a similar sympton to a coil pack problem, but they are sure that all the coil packs are working correctly.
