1.6 FSI Red Oil pressure warning light

Had my car serviced last week and now very occasionally get a red warning light on the dash. Oil level is correct, and the correct VAG approved oil was used. I asked a friendly mechanic for a view, his thoughts are at 120K miles I should be using a heavier oil than the car used from new, say 10/40W. Has anybody similar experience? Could it be a loose wire?

Light comes on at very light throttle, not when braking, cornering or at speed. Engine sounds fine, running at correct temperature. Did 120 miles yesterday and it didn't come on, did 2 trips today of 5 miles and it came one once.

Get it scanned. If it is low oil pressure, then you shouldn't be driving it. Using thicker oil is not a good idea. Thicker oil flows more slowly, so supply to oily bits is reduced, not increased. If it's not smoking, then it's probably low oil pressure. A decent mechanic would measure it, then you'd both know. Could be oil pick up blocked in the sump. Mac.

Don’t think the oil pressure sensor goes to the ecu it’s wired directly to the dash it should show up on vagcom under instruments if there is A fault with it

Cheap "try it first" option replace the oil pressure switch....second option get someone with a pressure gauge to check the oil pressure while the engine is running and hot..........its a 15-20 min job for someone with the correct gear.

Hi All. Thanks for your feedback. Oil pressure switch changed and all okay. There are two types: one with integrated oil level (c£85) and standalone switch (£20). Luckily for me it was the latter. My friendly garage, Falkland Performance in Glenrothes, did it while I waited and at a reasonable price.
