1.6FSI, not sure what to do next!

My TDi had been repeatedly showing rather a lot of odd codes and my battery was the original to the car at the time.

It seemed fine when tested with voltmeter and decent draw test and was subjected to ‘reconditioning’ charges every few months (as well as near daily 70 mile commutes).

Unfortunately, when starting the car when cold the voltage would just momentarily dip a tiny bit below what the car liked to see and any electronics dependent on sufficient voltage had a little whine to the ECU - throwing up errors on lots of motor and solenoid-driven devices.

I didn’t even think of my battery being an issue until my wife’s smart’s battery (4 years old) started to fail and her car started having the automotive equivalent of seizures. Failing to engage gear while driving, dashboard lights dipping out then coming back on while driving, beeps honks and warning Christmas on the dash panels. New battery and it all went away.

Electronics can be sensitive and a battery over 10 years old being in service is a testament to how good the these cars are at dealing with it but it’s a relatively inexpensive thing to try and is maybe just good precautionary maintenance.

I’m Scottish and there are the odd, fairly harmless, stereotyping comments about Scots on here. Also about the Welsh, English and Irish (other countries too). But it’s all meant in jest and good humour among friends. It’s probably easier once you’ve met people and been on here a while to know who is joshing and who is being serious. It is a very rare thing that it goes beyond mild jokes. Now excuse me, I’m off to see how ductile some ha-pennies are…

Changed the battery today and for one brief moment all lights were off. I understand next step is to get the codes cleared, hold my breath and start the car.
Do youself a favour if you have a Windows laptop, download VCDS Lite, it's free, buy a cable off eBay for a few pounds , although personally I would buy a quality cable fron Gendan at £20, and then your can clear and read codes yourself without trooping off to the garage every time.

Said before that there are 4 things any every A2 owner should have at the top of their priority list. They are...
A GOOD scanner - preferably VCDS not basic generic reader.
A MINIMUM of 2 working keys and working drivers door key lock.
A good electrical meter.
A copy of the owners handbook as it really is full of very useful information and answers many questions.

Then and only then start thinking about improvements / upgrades or mods to the car.
