1.6fsi water pipe problem.

Hi All. This weekend while doing an oil change I noticed a small mark on one of the water pipes. From the beginning of ownership the little beast has required regular water top up, so seeing the evidence I though I could deal with the problem. Anyway, investigation revealed a perished Y connector just by the expansion bottle. I called Audi and the bit that I need is not available I have to buy a bigger bit costing £48. For a poxy bit of plastic. Ah but he says, it will also prevent a problem lower down!. Never, and I had to deal with the problem quickly. So I went to the local plumber and got some bits. Did an emergency fix so I could drive. I then order two brass Y pieces of the interweb and voilla, all sorted. Total cost, less than £10(including emergency bits!)

The common Y piece pipe that breaks is the one that goes from the expansion tank to the back of the engine bay. It's about £3 from Audi, mine broke after a service, which is common, because the pipes have been disturbed, and they weaken with age. I've had a couple of pipes break immediately after having some work done.

Well done for creativity

Nice one mate, interestingly the second poster seemed to suggest that the part should be available on it's own given it has a £3 price tag. What search term did you use for those y connectors?

When my coolant pipe (#30, #31, #33) was replaced the also had to replace the thermostat housing #29 and #15, which is a combination of bits and bobs. The Y connection is still not replaced.

Maybe someone at Audi was trying to pull a fast one, or didnt want my few £ business, but I could see no point in replacing things that dont need replacing. And, I do think the plastic Y pieces are a bit weedy so hopefully the brass ones will last until I need to replace the rest of the pipework.

Mine have broken too. The stealer said that they don't sell the Y connectors separably. I wouldn't mind getting the full thing to avoid the chance that the tubes are perished too, but at 80 Euros it seems a bit much for two bits of plastic and some rubber pipe. Any advice on where to buy cheaper or should I just get two brass connectors instead?
