16’’ Tyre choice

Wow - congratulations Mike (on both counts)

I cringe at paying a tyre monkey hard earned cash for what does seem like an easy enough job, down south its getting close to £20 a wheel now! I would be very interested to hear on how the Michelins are and how well they fit.

Lastly, just a note to all that on my trawls through the web i have seen talk about tyre price increases for the spring in the region of 10%...

If you want the easiest, safest fit for 16" tyres, guaranteed to fit and give no issues, then 195/55 16 is the way to go. I agree that there's some great pricing on 205/55 16 but they do rub a little at the back and will also rub at the front, depending on what your wheel offset is.

I am now in a position to change and balance my own tyres, I got fed up of places around here charging at least £15 per tyre to change for me, so I got the kit to do my own. I'll be putting 195/55 16 tyres on shortly - Michelin CrossClimate+ - and will also be having the wheels refurbed too prior to this.

Up to my eyeballs in home improvements at the moment, and creating a nursery, hence being quiet of late.

Hi
I am thinking of exactly the same tyres and wondered if you had fitted yours? Just a little concerned as the 195/55 16s are not in the "definitive sticky" and some have suggested that they might rub

Hi,
I didn't hear a definative yes they are fine 195/55/16 so decided to go for 195/50/16. Improvement over the crashy stock tyre size but still not 'perfect'

Good evening. Just to update, I didn't fit the CrossClimate+ after all. I decided to go for Kleber Quadraxer2 tyres in the end in 205/55 r 16 size. Just couldn't turn down £55 a tyre safe in the knowledge that if they were too problematic, they would be a perfect fit for the winter wheels on the e-tron.

Spun them onto rims (which didn't get refurbed either) and popped them on. Yes they rub on bumps, but yes, Tank is lowered by 30mm too. I have new Bilstein B3 springs to go on shortly which I hope will improve the situation, but they're going well so far, quiet, grippy and look really good in the arches. So well that I'm thinking of getting 2 more for the front!!

However, 195/55 r16 is a definite yes on Mk1 16" TT rims - they're wider and have different offsets to A2 16" wheels.

Good news Mike.

I’ve never heard of the brand but that sounds a good price.

Please update if you do fit them to the front.

When you say ‘bumps’ do you mean serious speed humps or driving over a bit of paper?

Kleber are a subsidiary of Michelin - they're basically the same tyre as the CrossClimate+ but a lot less to buy. They fare very well in group tests of all-season tyres, with great reviews from owners.

By bumps, I mean sleeping policemen, hard cornering, stuff that compresses the springs. Absolutely fine on decent roads.

I am running 195/50/16 on my 1.4 tdi
As Hotdog has mentioned 195/50 r16 will fit admirably, but they don't give quite the crash-reduction needed for the A2's suspension. 195/55 is good, 205/55 is sublime, but you have to put up with a touch of rubbing.

Good morning Mike,

How are the 205/55s going? Did you put them on the front as well? Rubbing settled down?

Hiya Pinky - they're great at the back - the rubbing has all but gone now only the bigger bumps generate a momentary scrape.

I've not done fronts yet - had a lot on my plate recently and just not gotten round to doing them, but I'll be putting 205/55 on there too.

Thanks Mike.

‘Lot on my plate’ - Stork related platefuls are welcome but time costly.

Tell me about it!! Then there's been the rear suspension to do, sorting out the numpty who complained about my hand brake not working, doing the head bearings on my motorcycle, decorating the house so the paint smell is gone before the delivery man comes etc.
