16 FSI Colour Storm Front Coil Springs

Well I think its safe to say it has broken. Front shocks will need a bit of refurbishment also, as looking a bit tired. All to fully appreciate when taken apart etc.......

Purchased a set of AL's as AK's discontinued. Is there anything I should be aware of before I jack it up. Do I need to soak any nuts or bolts for a few days??

Thanks in advance

The only thing to keep an eye on is the captive nuts on the top mount inside the wheel arch that the top bolts go through to. If they are original then they can sometimes shear off and you then end up having to grind them off. Stick a mallgrips on them to give them extra assistance while you are undoing them from below.

Thanks Steve... I think you mean Mole Grips? I hope so. Might be worth getting some penetrating oil working for a few days. Wont harm as they say. Thanks as always ;)

No one has mentioned the top mounts. Likley to be originals, so on the way I'd think. Easier to do them now, than take it all apart again.
Mac.

My preffered method is to remove the strut with knuckle and seperate on the bench. Also makes fitting the shock back into the knuckle easier!
Draw back is need two new driveshaft nuts however i feel strong thread lock would actually work better and reuse the nut.
A pair of HD drop links wouldnt go a miss if yours have seen some action

That’s if you can get the driveshaft out of the hub. Some A2’s seem to slide out ok, some seem to be fused with ungodly strength.

Unsure whether you have found this over the years Steve, but I always find the TDi's are a royal pita to remove, having said that, I struggled with nearly 18tons of pressure to remove the one from my keeper FSi a couple of years back, and when it let go, so did my bowels!!!!!

I'm sure i remember reading on these pages many years ago that some model years (I think the earlier cars) had a kind of threadlock applied to the driveshaft thread from the factory. Can't find any reference to it now though.

You remember correctly but tends not to be be referred to as threadlock. Search keyword 'fretting'.

Great, thanks Andy. Have had to take whole hubs with driveshaft attached to my local mechanic in the past to have them pressed out on a ten tonne press. Ridiculous for such a small car with relatively low torque.
