17 x 8J ET35 ??

One for the bigger wheel gurus, is it possible to fit 17” 8J 5x100 wheels with offset ET35 ??...

Obviously tyre choice is important too, not least because I’m fairly low on coilovers, but that can be tweaked a bit to accommodate.

Am I going to have steering issues at 8J ET35?

Kennedy.

Of course I am aware of the ‘The definitive tyre / wheel size thread’ pinned on the wheel section, there is definitely some useful stuff in there!

Steering wheel will be heavy as hell, strain and knocking noises from your front end, and comfort less than zero.

My 50 cents

I have TT Comp 17" (7.5J ET32) wheels with Dunlop 215/40R17 tyres. The ride is firmer than with 16" wheels but the Steering wheel is exactling the same. I believe the Power Steering is just working harder.
I think you will have to put quite wide tyres to fit the 8J, this in turn will have an impact on the side height of the tires. You may have to put 215/35 or 225/35, that is very low and may be quite unconfortable.
Furthermore, with my low suspension, if I have passengers at the back, the rear tyres touch when passing humps on the road.
Hope this is helping. Let us know what solution you found.
Cheers

Thanks for comments Olerype and Captain'.

I know that at the sizes mentioned I'm pushing the limits a little but I'm happy to sacrifice a little practicality and comfort for a meaner look , and at the moment the car is lowered about 60mm, with Votex and has spacers fitted too so I'm already pretty familiar with rubbing tyres in various places - it's not really possible to have rear passengers with my current set up anyway!

I need to do some more workings-out and also price up the various tyre options. I was considering if 205/40R17 would fit to the 8J so I just had a look on tyrestretch.com and punched in the numbers, looks okay to me;

If I can get the tyre walls angled a bit then that should help tuck into the arches and give me a little more steering room, maybe...

I would think about getting a narrower wheel then perhaps play around with spacers to find the optimum fitting.
Alternatively choose a wheel with a different look to give you the right image without compromising safety.

Resurrecting an old thread.

I've got a hold of 17x8J ET35 OZ Racing rims that i'd like to put on the A2 for the next summer. I have standard suspension setup and been eyeing on 215/40/R17 tyres.
Currently I'm driving with 185/60/R15 winter tyres with pepperpots, and with this setup I've had zero issues. The diameter of 215/40 is same as 185/60, the only difference is the width.

Would you say they would fit without any (major) issues? I'd love the look of black A2 with gold Superturismos

They will fit, but you will need to cut a small section of the inner plastic arch liner on the inside edge so that they don't rub.

Thanks for the quick reply. Not much to do then.

I'll get back in touch in summer once they're fitted!

Steve has more experience with fitting oversized wheels than me and I haven't fit wheels any wider than 7.5J on an A2 (17" TT alloys 7.5j x 17 et 31 with 215/40/17 tyres) but I think without the car being lowered and running standard suspension you might get away with just bolting them straight on.

Tyres will obviously be slightly stretched on 8j rims and if there is any fouling (which is normally the O/S rear right inner wheel arch liner and N/S front left inner wheel arch liner on full lock) you might be able to just use 5mm Spacers to push them outwards slightly to gain clearance.

No guarantees but i guess time will tell and we look forward to the outcome and photos.

Gold or Bronze wheels on a Black car should look great 👍

The ride quality and comfort factor will definitely be slightly different from 185/60/15 tyres on Pepperpots though 😂👍

Yeah I'm painfully aware of that! My old A2 had 175/60 R15 summer tires and this current one had 215/40 17's with 7J rims last summer. I owned them simultaneously (the old one was a fixer-upper that I changed a gearbox on) and when driving them back-to-back I was certain that I won't be fitting the 17's next summer.

Last weekend I changed the old and tired shocks and dampers on the current car, and the ride quality got so much better that I'm willing to try the 17's on once again 🤣

Agreed, good suspension makes a huge difference as does the 17" wheels being completely round and true without buckles or flat spots on the insides that many unfortunately do have and are the cause of poor ride complaints.

Always clean the knaves of the wheels off too (where the wheel mounts onto the hub) as I've seen many wheels that people thought had a wobble on a wheel balancer disappear when cleaned off. It only takes a bit of grit or the like to make a difference. I always sand them off with 80 grit sand paper on an orbital sander back to clean bare metal then use clean copper grease before fitting them. Obviously don't forget to make sure the hubs on the car are clean too.

Then the final biggy is make sure the tyre pressures are right and the tyres are perfectly balanced to the wheels as most garages don't do this properly and on bigger wheels it makes a huge difference.

All mine are balanced on a Dynamic setting with weights on the inner and outer edges of the barrels inside which is good for 200mph with a perfect 0 - 0 reading. Never a wobble or vibration through the steering wheel guaranteed👌😁

The front axle is the important one, the rear you would probably not even feel if they weren't balanced at all.

I used to be fussy but tbh not so much anymore 😂👍
