255 miles from one tank after driving carefully..

Admittedly, I've only been driving for just over a month, but I'm confident in my ability.

I filled my FSI all the way up with 99, and since I have driven as economically as I can. It has been about a week, maybe a tad longer, since I filled up and I have only covered 255 miles and I have refilled today with one notch from empty. I believe I've seen people on the forum get upwards for 400 miles on a tank with FSIs - is this user error or is there something wrong with my A2?

I commute to work the usual 5 days/week 9-5, town driving not motorway. I have been to Nottingham and back since the fill up (~30 miles each way). Otherwise just errands and going to the gym, all town driving. Only on the motorway run has the car seen over 3K revs, and it's otherwise kept in and around 1.5-2K. Is my 6.3l/mi average realistic for purposefully economical driving? Is this down to my lack of ability as a driver or could there be something up with my car?

I don't really expect anyone to have a solid answer here, just throwing caution to the wind. Thanks.

What does 6.3l/mi mean? Can we talk in British imperial MPG so we are all on the same page?

We also need to know how many litres (or gallons) you filled the car with the second time before anyone can advise - otherwise we can only provide general answers along the lines of urban driving will always produce bad consumption figures.

my apologies, confusing units. It equates to about 29mpg

Thanks- if that’s mostly urban driving I’d say it’s about right personally, you need to do some long journeys at below 70mph to really see what it can do.
Thanks for your help, I'm back in Nottingham this weekend so I'll take it steady and see what I get. Do you have any tips in general for what the car prefers for economy?

The information you are providing remains vague. 29mpg (if accurate) is ridiculously low, even for crawling around the centre of town. I'd be expecting high 30s, maybe 40 mpg for local driving, stretching to 50 mpg on long fast journeys.

Start using the Fuelly app https://www.fuelly.com/ to monitor your fuel use and mileage and you'll have a better idea of what you're really getting.

The FSI is a specialised beast and needs someone familiar with it to get on top of setting it up. WOM Automotive are the people you need to book your car in with:

Just got Fuelly, got 29mpg back after I put in my fill up. I'll keep tracking and see how it goes. Also my balance is 85% city driving.

My FSI runs an average of 45mpg, on mixed, but usually spirited, everyday driving, two up, and shopping stuff.
@safbeafbe should get the car scanned, as 30 ish mpg is not normal.
Mac.
I do have an ABS warning light, on startup it says SERVICE! then OK, and a (( ! )) with 3 beeps comes up almost every drive. Might have something to do with it? I scanned it, and we think it might be the EGR.

Be good to post the scan results here. What scan tool did you use?
Has the car been serviced?
If you have ABS warning you have no ABS. Not a good idea to drive with known braking problems, MoT failure too.

Not sure what the scanner is, I borrowed it from a colleague. It's basic. Brakes work fine, very occasionally I'll feel what feels like a rock/lump on the brake pedal when pressing down. Not sure when the car was last serviced.

I'll say again, do yourself a favour and have the car properly serviced at least once by a specialist. WOM are the best people in the UK, not that expensive, and then you'll know that the car is performing as intended.

Otherwise you'll waste a lot of money, and end up frustrated and disappointed, I'm afraid.

I go like the wind….. motorway….. constant 70 ish🤫 and return over 44mpg. If it is a fsi (like mine) you need the proboost of Steve a2👍

Might be worth contacting someone on the members VCDS scan list

From an earlier response it sounds like there maybe a number of errors and a scan with VCDS might make it easier to diagnose. I don’t like the sound of the sensation you get through your foot at times when braking. Almost certainly due a service as others have said

ABS pump, perhaps?
Mac.

Best thing to do is meet up with a member with vcds and get an enthusiasts opinion, costs nothing. There are things that could be running bad that won't come up innscan like coolant temperature sensors, blocked air filter, blocked fuel filters, and so on. These will all have their 2mpg effect and all of a sudden your way off what it shoukd be doing. May be a few simple fixes. Driving any car in town on shirt journeys will get you 70% of its potential at best.

Make sure you come back feed us hungry addicts more info 😆 🤣
