3rd GEAR

I have a 75 TDI which drives fine bar 3rd gear and it’s very daft. Daft in the manner that up changing i.e. 1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th etc, works fine is smooth and 100% trouble free.

Down changing 5th to 4th is fine, 4th to 3rd is another thing entirely, the box bluntly refuses to engage and it’s as if there is a spanner blocking entrance to the gate. The only way I can then engage 3rd is to keep the clutch depressed drop the lever into second gear and then back up to 3rd mimicking up change, at which point 3rd is now as happy as larry to engage.

???

Has anybody else suffered this ? any possible remedy besides compete gear box rebuild as recommended to me by my local Audi ‘experts’ ??

Yes Brett 110, but runs perfectly bar this minor issue. I think the Audi lad qouted £350, but i wasn't listening too good when he started talking about "complete rebuilds" etc as i just considered the problem might be minor as i drive every day with no other faults or issues, plus on an previous car of mine (Rover coupe) that required a full box rebuild chaging gear was like turning two day old cement.

oh well, thanks for the advice.

Had the same problem on mine (120,000;)) after I had a new cam belt fitted. I thought I was going to need a new gearbox but all it needed were the gear cables re-adjusting. Do a search on here for it and you'll see there's even a video to explain how to do it. It really is a simple fix.

Hope this helps.

Sweet, i'll have a look once i get home from work. Cheers squad. I was shocked at the rebuild talk it seemed OTT, as mentioned before on a previous car whose gear box was mashed, it would randomly pop out of gear, refuse to go into gear or refuse to come out, and reverse was a complete myth.

by all means do the realignment first. I've heard of a couple of 'boxes going over on the German forums, but it's quite rare and not that expensive to get rebuilt.
