Nice collection :).

Thanks ?
number 4 the oss arrived today thanks to mike delivering to Bristol Airport at 4pm ...over 500 miles in the most atrocious weather and I’m pleased to say no water anywhere...I was concerned not having had an oss ...but it must be cracking system ..as to drive through 60mph wind ..horizontal rain ..it didn’t miss a beat ..battery compartment the same so all good ..just the Cambelt to get done ASAP then drive it and see how we like petrol ..and only then decide what to do with it keep as original as it left the factory or go to town like the other ...sally thought it felt a bit lifeless after the diesel torque ..but whatever I will keep ...but I do plan to sell the other dove grey 1.4 12k at some stage ..

Paul - one thing worth noting is that the 1.4i 16V only really wakes up when you get it beyond 3500rpm. I didn't learn that with my Mum's Polos back in the 90s - the first 8 valve Polo she had was relatively grunty at the bottom end, so when she got the AUA or similar-engined model around 2000, on trips home from Uni I thought it felt rather weak and gutless in the rev range I used up to around 4500rpm, simply because I didn't thrash it and actually get it into the rev range where it works (I've become a teenager in my mid 40s!!). My partner's 187k AUA car (now that I've got it running properly) really flies up at the top end - it's probably not as fast as the Tdi (particularly when the torque peak kicks in) but it doesn't feel like it is being left behind, and it is so light on its toes and with the light gearchange as well, particularly on twisty roads - that you can really enjoy it - but you really do have to 'drive it like you stole it'. It is quite refreshing in this day and age to be able do that without your license being remotely in danger, since most equivalent modern cars have a significantly higher power to weight ratio (and with a fair bit more weight) and would probably only achieve the same feel when doing something daft.

Concur with everyone's positive comments about your collection of near concours vehicles as well - this has to be worth an article if one of the magazines were interested.

Thanks for that Robin
I do love your writings you write informative and eloquently with a great sense of humour you should write for the motoring press ? I will try what you have suggested sally will love that she did a few rally’s in an old Mini Cooper ? but I get it I do but let’s wait until Cambelt done before redlining it eh ? ....nimbleness ist thing I noticed with the light petrol engine up front .
Not concourse but really nice I will accept ...and err no motoring press please they may catch sight of other stuff I’ve got tucked away ?

Hello my friend happy new year to you and your family ? if I haven't already said it but I’m sure I did ...it was to much of a temptation with that milage Menno ....sally is still smiling so it can’t be that bad ? but I don’t know what she would do if a low mile good spec tdi with oss came up ..I would possibly be living in the garage ? now that’s an idea it’s got a heater and radio ? get a micro wave put up a hammock ?

Looks like it's the garage for you then! ?

As Robin said, and i've mentioned before, these 1.4 petrol cars if running spot on and with sports suspension, really are entertaining cars to drive around twisty B roads. Just keep the revs up a bit and plant the foot as you exit the corners and revel in the go cart handling. You might just be persuaded by how entertaining the light 1.4 is. ;)

I would like to know someone with the Billstein b4 B3 combo on the 1.4 petrol how does it sit and is it to firm I’m just thinking of the big weight difference in the TDI upfront

Just caught up with this thread (as still finding my way around). What a fabulous collection! Absolutely gorgeous.

I'm very interested in the 1.4 petrol vs TDI debate. So far, I concur with Robin's thoughts on the petrol: loved my Lasi before the engine went into it's Autumnal miles (at 158K).
