4 wheel alignment

Rear axle fastener sizes and torque specifications (not applicable for 1.2 TDi)

Audi recommend that all bolts, screws and nuts applicable to this repair are renewed if removed. The stub axle nut has a RH thread on both axles; it is safety critical that these nuts are renewed if removed.

All sections of the how-to are now at final draft stage, there remains just one photo to take and upload. Then if there are no comments over the next few days I will transfer the instructions to the How-to forum.

There seams to be controversy over the o/d of the rear axle bush (Rusty911) thinks it's 69mm in his "Toe out Toe in" thread which has thrown me as i was just about to place an order. On ebay the listings say o/d of 72mm for the Bilstien bush and your measurement of the bush was 71mm going by your pic. Do you have a link to the seller of the bush you bought from? Thanks Mark.

You can see what I measured and the sizes of the tools I selected. The bush is larger than the hole it is pressed into, it deforms quite significantly as it is pressed in. The bushes I bought were Fibi, one came from eBay and one from AutoDoc. They behaved, in terms of fitting and removal, exactly as the Audi bushes I removed.
71 or 72 mm will go in with a tight fit, not sure about 69 mm, could that be the hole size? I think, without checking, a 68 mm tool just passes through the hole.

I have seen poly bushes measured at 69mm that are meant to fit the A2 - not sure if deformation of those isn't as much on ploy bushes or it s manufacturer decision so they fit more cars.

I went for Febi also and they definitely deformed but work well.

Poly bushes may fit more cars but I suspect A2 bushes are A2 specific. There is not much weight on the rear axle so an A2 bush has two large kidney shaped holes with very little rubber. Bushes for steel cars look more like solid robber with a couple of holes drilled in, they are far more rigid.

I'm fairly confident that Powerflex list the A2 and TT mk1 for instance with the same part number.

So it seams the ebay linked ones saying 72mm are the correct ones, thanks for clearing that up.

I would prefer it to say Febi 71mm but yes it will go in. 71mm will take less effort to get it in and is the same as OEM.
I can’t find any rear bushes that specify the uncompressed diameter on eBay. Just play it safe and get Febi Two of us have used Febi successfully.

I can’t find a Bilstein bush on eBay. I suggest buying Febi.

If you Google search for Fibi Bilstein Parts Finder you can set up an account with your vehicle details (up to 99 of them). Then search for parts and the Febi numbers. It is not a site that takes orders so then you Google the part numbers for the best price.
Very good for VAG motors.

Checked this on Febi Parts finder, TT part is 19928. Perhaps Powerflex keep their part numbers down where they can get away with it?

Yup agreed - for sure I was not suggesting the Febi parts were the same as they are clearly not. It seems to be a design decision by Powerflex but it does show that design wise they do seem to be very similar.

Just a word of warning for anybody removing the complete rear axle assembly, 4 wheel alignment is difficult on these cars. The garage I chose, a classic car specialist, has had three attempts and got the job hopelessly wrong. Many will not even take the job on.
Leave the castings in position and drop the axle By removing the bush bolts.

Got a second opinion on the alignment. Any suggestions for 4 wheel alignment in the Yorkshire area?
