5th gear selection problem

I have an intermittent gearbox problem on 5th gear.
When I try to engage 5th gear it will not engage but growl - synchromesh not working?
There is no rhyme nor reason as to when, how or why this will occur.
Repeated attempts on a journey will eventually succeed - but it is unsettling.
I have tried double-declutching but it too cannot be guaranteed to succeed.
No answer from my garage.
It will always engage when the mechanic drives it on a test!

Hi and welcome to the A2oc.

The gear box oil is never changed in services. When members have upgraded their 5 th gear,they have found hardly any oil in the gear box. Yours will proberly not have been done in 13 years. So for the sake of £20 of oil and 1/2 hour labour it's worth doing.

Hi Srabster,

David is correct; the gearbox oil should definitely be changed, though I doubt it's the cause of your issues.
Luckily for you, the 5th gear is very easily accessible. The gearbox doesn't even need to be taken out of the car for the 5th gear synchro to be renewed.
