6 speed box in a TDI 90?

@dj_efk , @Robin_Cox

So do I take it then that from an installation angle the PTW is 100% identical to the MYP, and Rob can be reassured of this? I wasn’t sure about your comment “the bracket adapters made to make the existing gear cable routing compatible with the slightly different positions of the bracket support mounting points”, different to what precisely - the MYP or original box?

Robin is referring to the bracket support mounting positions of the six speed vs. The original 5 speed box.

Read the MYP thread. All the six speed boxes that have been swapped into an A2 successfully (MYP, PTU, NTG & PTW) are indeed 100% identical externally for installation purposes. The PTW however differs internally from the other three as it has usefully longer ratios in gears 1-4 which make it marginally better suited to UK traffic conditions and hence it’s the one to go for in my humble opinion, especially if you have a TDI90, as this has the ability to deliver more torque lower down the rev range and hence it works well with the longer gears.

the MYP / PTW / various others as well as the 5-speed original casing all have a folded metal bracket that supports the bowden cable ends for the gear change cables, angling the cables towards the selector tower. You re-use the bracket from the 5-speed box - on my PTW this was absent as it had been kept with the cables (and usually is). In both 5- and 6-speed cases, this bracket is attached to the casing with 3 bolts. One of these is in exactly the same reference position on the casing (the one nearest the selector if I remember) - so to prepare the converter brackets the main bracket is fitted to this one first while the other ones are sorted out. The other two mounting holes are displaced about 2 inches laterally and diagonally, and laterally and vertically respectively away from the originals. Two L / Z-shaped pieces of metal are required that have a hole at one end bolted into the new casing's equivalent mounting point, and a hole at the other end securing the foot of the 5-speed bracket. Various means of making this are possible, but it took Bert less than 20 minutes to make and secure these from pieces of workshop steel. Obviously, you could go to town getting them CNC-milled for extra alloy goodness, but this isn't necessary.

I've attached the pdf obtained from A2oc here to explain this - images really do say 1000 words.

No sooner had I replied, Rob confirmed he was ok with it. So I’ll focus my search on the PTW then… not many around at the moment though. One fairly decent one but not cheap, collection only and not local.

Thanks very much again for all your help.

Murphy's Ebay law (in my general experience) suggests that as soon as you stop looking for the exact thing you were searching for and seek alternatives, one will appear at an excellent price that you see *only* after clicking "buy it now" on the other.. best of luck, one it bound to show up!

One thought - try searching for golf 1.6tdi 6-speed gearbox - rather than a specific code. It may just be the advert doesn't have the code in it but you can find it in the photos. Doing this brought up a bunch of boxes in the 300-quid range, maybe suitable with some reading and research.

I tried that but they all have different codes. At least those there now do, but yes it seems well worth trying this search periodically as well as the “obvious” one.

You could try one of those national aggregator type outfits where you input your details online and also input what you’re looking for and it broadcasts to all breaker yards in their network, however in your shoes I’d be looking for a local-ish specialist VAG breaker you could phone up.

Just to conclude on the MYP vs. PTW question, the only reason MYP is the most popular is simply because that code was first discovered as an A2 TDI upgrade, it could easily have been any of the others that was first hailed as the breakthrough to a six speed A2. I dare say there are more codes that would work beyond the four mentioned above too.

I tried both just a bit earlier. The results from breakerlink have, so far, been disappointing with quotes pushing £600. But there seems to be little rhyme or reason about prices so I might get lucky…

Afternoon Malay,

If you’re not set on which actual gearbox you want and just want the cheapest available 6 Speed Gearbox for your A2 then this is what’s currently available on the usual auction website (no connection to any of the sellers). This is from a quick search which I guess you’re already doing. The results as you know will change daily/weekly.

MYP £360 with best offer. This probably isn’t too far from me so I could collect and drop it off at WOM next week.

PTU £420 collected from Manchester. Maybe able to haggle on price and see if someone could collect for you?

PTW £350 collected in Manchester. Again haggle on price and see who could collect and bring it to WOM area for you. Edit: the listing has Manchester but if you scroll down it’s in the London area. Maybe worth pursuing if this is your preferred choice.

NTG £550 collect from Oldbury. By far the most expensive and a good hour from me but (at a push) could collect for you and drop off at WOM next week.

I had WOM fit the MYP to the OEM A2 and it delivers brilliantly on my 61 miles (each way) commute. Mainly A46 at 60mph it’s consistently providing 75mpg. 80mpg on the A46 itself but drops when I come off and navigate the local roads to work or home.

Kind regards,

Tom

I think if you can find a low mileage box for £450 or less then that’s reasonable. That seems to be the going rate.

Hi Tom,
That’s a really kind offer. I saw those MYP and PTW ones which seemed reasonably priced, however was put off by the listings not quoting mileage. So even if mileage is known I suspect it’ll be pretty high. I’ll keep searching daily (at least), got a couple of weeks before I start to get really anxious, and if there’s something in your area then I might take you up on your offer.

Yep that’s roughly the figure I had in mind, if I find one for what you paid that would be a nice bonus!

I might have found myself a good PTW box. Mileage claimed to be remarkably low (17k) and breaker seems to have a decent reputation. Waiting to see some photos though. Angling after a big favour… is there any nice kind person here that might be able to collect it from Manchester (M28) and run it over to WOM, sometime before 8th November? I’d obviously be happy to cover costs and make it worth your while. They do offer delivery but seemed a bit steepish - as an alternative does anyone know what Paisley Freight would charge? Their website doesn’t say, except to say it would require a pallet.

17k miles! That’s basically brand new, these boxes are very strong so will do very high mileages without complaint.

In an A2 I would expect your box to last pretty much forever due to the lower amount of stresses being run through it resulting from the car’s very low weight compared to the car it would have originally been fitted to.

I know, 17k sounds ridiculous, a bit too good to be true! Makes me a tad sceptical, be happier if they’d said 50 or something like that…

this does sound promising. If it is a general scrappy that isn't overly big, and the ad is new, I always immediately look for 'other items' and try to find a bunch of parts from the same car (same model version / colour, year etc. ) that may have other photos and / or a mileage reference to try to cross-correlate - the gearbox specialist places tend to be divorced from the vehicle by the time they're listed if the info isn't cited.

I looked at other boxes on one of the links above and found a Touran 1.6tdi box with a new code to me - JYK for under £300 ; the photos of the casing look similar in profile to the PTW (on the flywheel / engine side) and my removed 5-speed box that I reused in my other Tdi) but I am going to do a bit of reading about the casing part numbers, and the gearing and other internals look like as compared to PTW/MYP etc.

Key thing is that whatever the three-letter code is, you are also needing it to be an 02S part number - that is the subdivision of the MQ250 gearbox family that we are looking for in each case for Tdi substitute gearboxes.
