6 speed box in a TDI 90?

At last, I’ve sourced my box (recon MYP, thanks @andrewgeorge , and thanks too to @A2Z for stepping aside). Seemed like a good, relatively safe option at a fair price. Thanks to all the advice from you along the way so far, it really helps.

Now, the one thing I still need to get is a starter motor (and connector?) that’s compatible with the MYP box. I’d really appreciate some guidance (e.g. part number) as to exactly what I need. Naively I hoped plugging in “MYP starter motor” on eBay might come up with something but it didn’t.

One other thing, I have been wondering what to do with my original box once my MYP is fitted. My father, who is never short of an opinion ?, was adamant I ought to keep hold of it and eventually sell it with the car as he claimed it would greatly increase its value as a “future classic” as somebody might want to take it back to its original specification, with matching part numbers. I was pretty sceptical myself as, while Gracie might be a virtually unique car, she’s probably already clocked up too many miles to be much value to a collector. And I don’t have much room to store a gearbox anywhere, but could if I thought it was really worth it. However I’m not especially clued up on what’s important to genuine collectors… I’d be interested in people’s opinions.

Hello again Malcolm,

You should able to use your existing starter motor, no requirement to get the Passat starter motor from memory.

Have a chat with Rob or Marcus as they have a jig that the gearbox is placed into and some of the bell housing removed from the MYP (and probably other) gearbox to allow perfect aligned to utilise your original started motor.

This will be an easier option for the starter motor replacement later in life if something goes wrong. Simply purchase another starter motor from one of our awesome ethical breakers.

Although it wouldn’t be your problem, but should you not have the bell housing shaved to use the Passat starter motor then subsequently sell this ultra rare A2 and the starter motor fails, the new owner will of course be searching for another A2 starter motor which may not work as it should as they’re unfortunately replacing the failed Passat item with an A2 item. Like I said, wouldn’t be your problem but could cause unnecessary time and money wasted for this hypothetical new owner.

I’ll not say much more as this really is beyond my mechanical limits. Have a chat with Rob or Marcus before you purchase something that may not be required.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thinking of your old 'box, it used to be that its slightly higher-ratio 5th gear cogs were sought after by AMF/BHC owners to lengthen their stride a little. However with the advent of the 6-speed boxes, this mod is now nowhere near as effective for the money you'd spend doing it. To be honest I don't think your old one would now have any use except as a replacement for someone else's failed one, if they didn't also want to go down the 6-speed route.

At the outset I was a bit uncertain whether I needed to get a compatible starter motor, however unprompted, Rob specifically said I should get one… hence the question.

Understood Malcolm,

If the mechanical wizard who is fitting the MYP for you also suggests to get the matching starter motor then that’s exactly what I’d be doing.

No such discussion was had during my installation but my specifics was a TDI 75 AMF. May well be different for the TDI 90.

Kind regards,

Tom

Well I hope that WOM are the mechanical wizards I’m looking for! After Rob specifically requested it I did query it but he was quite firm on it. So the exam question is, what is a “matching” starter motor?

Hi Malcolm,

From memory it’s from the CAYC engine but will check right now and update this post shortly.

Edit: Have a look here which mentions the starter motor with a part number of 02Z911024H looks to be a good item for a TDI 90.

Well beyond my mechanical knowledge now. Hopefully one of our members with a lot more experience will be along to assist.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks, I’m probably missing something but tried searching on eBay for “CAYC starter motor” and it came up with a range of cars, some of which sounded like a match (Passat B7) but others which sounded like they’d have had a PTW box (Golf). Does this imply that the same starter motor would be compatible with either MYP or PTW box?

Hi Malcolm,

We have breached my mechanical knowledge here. Did you look through the link in the above post, I edited it not so long ago.

I’m sure someone who has already converted a TDI 90 will be along soon enough. Did Rob or Marcus not suggest a specific part number as I’m sure they’ve done this upgrade a few times.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks again, just saw your update a minute ago, looks like the linked post answered all my questions!

Actually I think I might need a bit more help! As the linked post says, that was the starter motor for an A1, and when I search for the part number on eBay it says it’s not compatible with a Passat B7, so not sure whether I should be concerned. The later posts in that thread talk about compatibility checks I’ve no hope of making when I’m buying the gearbox remotely. Why shouldn’t I just get the starter motor for a Passat B7?

Edit - Rob’s got back to me recommending exactly the same part number, so guess it must be ok and I won’t go asking awkward questions!

Just seen the updates here / think you’ve ordered the correct starter / you need one from a CAYC engined car.

This is the one I ordered, was also CAYC. Worked perfectly on a PTW with BHC combination - very meaty start as well. ps - the link won't work as obviously I bought it last year but at least it specifies the part number.

I’m not surprised you say my box (or its contents) is not worth a great deal on its own. But my father’s point was that, if we really believe that one day these “future classics” will become actual classics, then they’re probably worth a great deal more to a future collector if they’re in as near to original condition as possible, or could be reverted to original condition with some effort, even if they lose all the real-world benefits of the 6 speed box. For sure if it were already a classic, some would see it as sacrilege to remove original components. Perhaps this is a discussion for another thread on the general topic of the merits of enhancing our pride and joy.

I sold my old GRJ gearbox from Audrey for a nominal sum, you’ll get £75-100 for it I would think
I kept my GPK box just in case - some kind of 6th sense - at one point it could possibly have been sold on within A2oc or the FB A2 group for a nominal sum but various conversations fell through. A few months later the original EWQ in my project car broke while on the way home without warning so that only 1st, 2nd and reverse were available as I was leaving the shops. The same local mechanic who did my PTW swap transferred the GPK into my project car in an afternoon along with a new bottle of gear oil - a complete transformation and pure luck that the box was available.

Roughly how big is it? If I’m going to be bothered doing something with it I’ll have to find somewhere for it and space at home is very scarce

they're surprisingly compact. From memory picking it up from where I kept it for a few months in the back of my Avant it was possible for me to pick it up and move it around without any issue apart from needing gloves due to the amount of coat-everything dust from within the clutch housing - and I should stress that I'm not a body-builder - it is that light for a piece of kit that takes the torque from a 1.4tdi and moves a >1 tonne car around for 20 years+. If we take the image of the gearboxes from the MYP swap thread, the clutch housing casing largest part is maybe 14-15 inches across the casting edges of where the clutch goes ; then behind that (right hand side of image below) you've got the final drive/diff casing that is another 9-10 inches at the widest point. So perhaps 2 foot across the X-axis in the image below, by about ~18-20 inches in Y-Axis width, and slightly less in height, all at maximum points ; obviously there is a lot of space that isn't occupied within that notional box. When delivered it came on top of a small pallette that was around a 2 foot cube with a lot of clingfilm inside it total.

Got a call from Rob (WOM) this afternoon to say the MYP box is in, along with new DMF and clutch, and all's good. He thought that all my troubles were down to the gearbox, he inspected the cables and thought they were excellent so left them alone. Looking forward to collecting her first thing tomorrow ?
