8Z2121058 water pipe

Is the pipe there deteriorated because it has been covered in diesel from a leaking tandem diesel/vacuum pump? When the pump leaks (as the AMF ones usually do eventually), diesel seeps down over the coolant pipes directly underneath (including the coolant sensor housing and attached pipework) which makes them soft and eventually prone to failure - if you put your hand down there you get covered in black sticky exudate which is the surface of the pipe dissolving off...
Yes I think that’s probably also an issue with my car, that’s probably why we had to change the coolant temp sensor (and now this hose that’s perished / deteriorated)

The car seems to have had some struggles starting up if left for a few days, and the garage were looking towards some kind of fuelling issue (if you use the car everyday there’s no issues) but I guess it will eventually develop into a larger problem :(

anyway, for now I need to replace the stupid hose, if I can get one, and do that, then I will look into fixing any other problems there after, as without the hose, the car isn’t going anywhere at all

That's what I had exactly. Was openly described on here as a classic sign of the AMF pump failing / leaking so there is air in the diesel supply pipe, and sure enough when I felt around the pipework behind the diesel pump it was like tar everywhere and very soft-feeling pipes as well as obvious fuel pooling on the subframe and undertray. Got a Bosch pump and replacement coolant pipes fitted and it resolved most of the issues straight away.

Even if Audi Tradition are not selling to UK at the moment there must surely be a way to get that pipe to you - there are enough A2 friends over the channel that it must be possible to obtain one and post it over (25 Euros is not going to invoke importation tax issues, surely?). Very best of luck - this problem should be so easy to fix and would have been 6 months ago!

Do you have details of the parts that were required to fix your issues?
What exactly is the pump? I haven’t looked it up and probably won’t investigate it any further until the car is back up and running.

Hoping there aren’t any other issues along the way, and that the coolant loss has been just down to the hose itself!

did you also replace the same stupid coolant hose? ?

The AMF diesel/vacuum tandem pump is a well known weak spot - the seals go and it dribbles diesel down the back/side of the engine and over the coolant sensor housing and associated pipework. It is the big silver-coloured thing at the right hand end of the engine block with two fuel pipes coming out of it - if you've been looking at your engine it is on top of the coolant sensor housing obscuring your view of the pipework.

something like this :

I had to think about it and check my posts / parts purchases, but in my case the exact location of the leak meant specifically it was the return pipe to the coolant expansion tank that had gone soft near where it is clamped onto the block - which I was able to get a replacement for from TPS, what was on the rest was an oil leak from the rocker cover and didn't require replacement.

Pertinently, if the pump is leaking diesel, it will continue to wreck the pipework after it is repaired so perhaps needs to be checked for diesel leaks around the underside of this sooner rather than later.

so i managed to get the pipe sent to a friend in europe, who then forwarded it to me (from the audi website, theyre still not sending to UK because of brexs**t)

ended up costing around £100!
because of the double shipping costs etc.

now to see if the car still leaks coolant / water ??? !

the tandem pump is likely shagged as there is some kind of mixture diesel/oil pissing around there.

seems like the leak has stopped, but on my coolant bottle there is still a small amount of water / coolant / moisture each time its driven however i have not noticed the levels drop

at the moment the coolant bottle is a little overfilled past the max point
i dont think its an issue but this may be the cause for the leak on the ring, possibly being expelled from the release valve (not sure entirely!)

will report back after a few more hundred miles of bashing it about

thanks to all
