A/C Dryer 8Z0820193B

Good Evening,

You were right first time, Denso, as per your post in my linked thread. Thank you for the Denso part number in that post that allowed me to search with confidence but sadly nothing about anywhere.

Andy
Andy,
Do you think that the Denso part, : DFD02013, if it was available, would be correct?
Mac.

Good Evening Evros,

Many thanks for posting this detailed reply it must have taken some time with many interesting points which I will take to heart.

I know very little about A/C but will read the A/C SSP and watch the Denso video but probably my ignorance which is why I am puzzled by the term 'evaporator' you use often. At first I thought this would be just another term for condenser but with phrases like 'When the condenser has been out, undo the joint on the line going towards the evap.' it is clearly different. Compressor?

Andy

Hi Andy,

I still owe this thread a couple of pictures, but I was chasing a P0130 on a different car. Again, error with out a CEL, hardest to track down. Did not succeed mind you. Car is running fine. The A2 still misfires but I managed to get it through the MOT....don't ask!

The evaporator is the "radiator" inside the dash. Where the freon lines disappear behind the firewall. It is where liquid loses heat and becomes a gas again before it gets compressed and so on and so forth.

You will notice that one of the lines going into the dash, has a joint that unbolts. When you undo that there is a small mesh filter-like tube. That is the orifice tube or "metering device". If you or the garage find out that it is clogged up, then sit back, take a deep breath and start collecting all the parts.

So, it's called an "evaporator", because that's what happens inside of it. A better description might be AC matrix?

Good Afternoon Evros,

Thanks, very clear I understand now.

This link works and they do offer the Denso DFD02013. I thought it best to ring them and hopefully if helpful to get someone to eyeball the part to confirm fitment, but no telephone number, hate these places. Dug a little deeper

Decided not to order.

Thanks anyway.

OK here they are, spot the differences.

The wrong part has a 45 degree chamfer as opposed to the correct part that has a round edge.

Also as has been noted before the bolt is different.

@Andrew Andy, I have an old drier and a new one. If you shake the old one you can feel the mass of the dessicant being moved, as opposed to the new one where yu cannot. The old one must have oil residue in it and humidity held in the dessicant.

Bonus: The evaporator, check the on eon your cars vs the one from nissens shown below. No fittings on it whatsoever despite the part number being correct!!! Just like the drier.

Hi Andy,
I sent an enquiry to Denso Germany, (via an email an ex Denso man gave me).
They have recommended ordering from Tetrosyl Express.
It is not a stock item, (no surprise being A2 specific), but they are your best bet to order from.

Mac.

Good Afternoon Mac,

Thanks, another to follow up.

I have tomorrow earmarked a trip to APD which you passed on via PM last Thursday. I will report back.

Hi all,

I was watching this thread with interest as I'm rebuilding my AC system too. And just like @Evripidis I'm also in a country where if you want this done to a good standard, you essentially have to do it yourself. My AC works, it is just starting to leak at the usual spots on the condenser. I want it to work for another 20 years so will try to do a good job and only do it once.

I bought the Dryer/Accumulator PN 8Z0820193B from Audi Tradition for a whopping 127euro just to be sure to get a part that fits. Hopefully this is a properly sealed and serviceable new part and not something that has been sitting on a shelf at Audi towers for 20 years! There is another Dryer on Autodoc that looks correct to me, its the FrigAir 137.50001. There is 1 left in stock currently, it has the welds on the outside and *looks* to have an M8 threaded bolt hole.

I also bought a new Denso 6SEU12C compressor which should come prefilled with full system oil fill, I believe its 180ml. I also bought a Nissens 94584 Condenser. Orifice tube and all system seals are ordered with Audi Dealer.

I plan to flush all the lines while they are off, not sure what solvent I will use for that yet. The evaporator I'm not sure whether I should attempt to flush that due to the way it sits, it seems like it would be difficult to do any good so maybe is best left alone. I won't be taking out the evaporator. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no catastrophic failures in the past and the car still has the original compressor working.

I have a friend with an automatic AC machine for filling so no issues there. He doesn't have nitrogen for purging and pressure testing so I think we will pull a vacuum for at least a few hours and that is probably the best we can do with the equipment that we have.

I found the below video quite good with a lot of useful info around oil quantity and best practice on the different types of AC systems.

So if anyone has any useful info or tips regarding flushing or purging or other best practice before commissioning the system, then fire away!

Hi,

By the time you have bought the purge bottle, solvents, and all the rest of it; it is better to take out the dash and replace the evaporator.

The condenser also, and I don't think you can flush it adequately as the passages are too small. On this car the mounts are just too brittle.

If you can find someone to offer these as a service then OK.

The lines you can clean, acetone or something that can evaporate, you can use a piece of string and pieces of toilet paper.

All in all, if you do all the steps, there is very little that can fail. If you can find someone that can do it right then pay them, and write the added cost to the warranty that they might offer.

Good Afternoon,

I owe this thread a few posts, I will get on with it.

First an update on my trip to APD mentioned in the quote above but it is largely negative.

I called in at my local APD branch and parked up unbeknown to me in the staff car park, lots of little vans decked out in their APD smart livery, impressed. Walked in and found myself on the wrong side of the parts desk, nobody seems to mind, moved to the customer side and set about my enquiry only to find I have left my sheet with all the codes on it, they must have thought I was a right idiot but did call me young man often. My patient and helpful handler chap managed to retrieve all the brands and part codes etc based on reg and found they could supply a Mahle dryer. No good, Mahle is on the incompatible dryer list so I left but thinking about it I never asked if they could order it up to branch without me paying so I could inspect first, I might go back. Left by the customer door onto a large empty customer car park, at least I know where to go next visit.

As it stands two brands NRF and Nissens are abundantly available everywhere so useful to know Mahle is obtainable but a struggle to find.

I did order a Denso off ebay, correct type by ad picture, only to be sent a Nissens which was wrong, sent it back.

Back later.

Thanks Evros. I won't be removing the dash and evap unless I open the system and find the black death.

Back to the dryer, why don't you guys buy the dryer from audi tradition? Check out the FrigAir 137.50001 on Autodoc too, it looks like the correct part to me, it's about €50.
